  • We recently held our Q4 policy forum in Dublin, This was an ESI members only event discussing important items such as our new report on "Alternative Network Charges for Energy storage" published alongside Economic Consulting Associates (ECA), the ESBN demand flexibility product consultation and also Flexible connections and how this avenue can be useful for storage assets. There was some great discussions had on the day!

  • We are delighted to publish our latest analysis with Economic Consulting Associates (ECA) on alternative network charges for energy storage. Network charges present a significant barrier to investment in energy storage, particularly in the Republic of Ireland where storage is treated as final demand and is subject to significant import charges. This means the charges fail to reflect the value that energy storage offers for relieving pressure on networks by charging and discharging in a manner that eases, rather than amplifies, network congestion. This analysis shows that implementing more cost reflective charges on storage assets will increase their utilisation by around 30% and yield consumer benefit in excess of €50 million per annum. The alternative charges also yield much stronger financial results for storage operators, significantly improving the investment case for a range of storage durations. It is time to rethink how network charges are imposed on energy storage and the recommendations in this report provide a blueprint on how changes to current policy can better unlock the value of storage and benefit consumers.

  • We are delighted to be supporting Energy Technology Live 2025! Battery storage is playing an important role in the decarbonisation of Ireland's electricity system and currently, ESB has one of the largest portfolios in Europe. On Friday, we were delighted to welcome EU Commissioner-designate Michael McGrath to our Aghada site in Co #Cork to officially open our latest major battery plant which is part of ESB's investment of up to €300m in the technology. The 150MW (300MWh) project – delivered with our partners Fluence and Powercomm Group – will provide fast-acting energy storage to help provide grid stability and support more renewable power onto Ireland’s electricity system.
