European Movement Ireland is an independent, not-for-profit, membership-based organisation working to develop the connection between Ireland and Europe. We facilitate links between all sectors of Irish society and the EU by running a number of advocacy campaigns, education programmes, training courses, information briefings, Regional Dialogues and networking events. We also produce clear, factual and relevant reports and publications outlining key European issues and their impact on Ireland. Our goal is to provide an unbiased, independent voice on all elements of Ireland's membership of, and relationship with, the EU. From providing our corporate members with information and assistance on European funding channels and consultations, to offering our student and graduate members advice and guidance on career opportunities in the EU, we work to ensure transparency and engagement at all levels in Ireland’s relationship with Europe.

#AYearinEMI In October European Movement Ireland and Grant Thornton Ireland hosted “CSRD Unpacked: The Practicalities of Implementation and What Comes Next,” which featured a keynote speech from former EU Commissioner for Financial Services, Financial Stability and Capital Markets Union, Mairead McGuinness. As of 1 January 2025, large companies in Ireland with over 250 employees will be required to comply with the CSRD, among others. Large businesses must now place sustainable reporting on the same footing as financial reporting. The event emphasised practical steps for businesses to navigate these new requirements. Speakers stressed the challenges of implementing the directive, particularly in building the necessary skills and capacity, but also highlighted the potential benefits, including uncovering new business opportunities and managing risk more effectively. In September, following Mario Draghi’s report, The Future of European Competitiveness, there has been much focus on strengthening and improving the EU economy, CEO European Movement Ireland Noelle O Connell spoke to Joe Lynam Newstalk following its launch, discussing the report she said; “It’s big, it’s bold, it’s brave, it’s ambitious and it’s outlining the challenges and the opportunities that are there, that if Europe wants to be bold and cease them, it can. #AYearinEMI In June, European Movement Ireland had the honour of awarding President of the Eurogroup Paschal Donohoe, European of the Year 2024, which was kindly sponsored by PwC Ireland. This award recognises individuals and organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to promoting and enhancing Ireland’s place within the EU. Addressing the ceremony Honorary President of European Movement Ireland Taoiseach Simon Harris said; “Minister Donohoe has played an instrumental role in the recovery of the Eurozone economy after the COVID-19 pandemic and ensured the stability of the euro area following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and rising global inflation. I commend him for his leadership, talent, and ability to achieve consensus by implementing prudent fiscal policy that has benefitted the euro area. This award today is a great recognition of his contribution and commitment to the role of President of the Eurogroup.” President of the Eurogroup Paschal Donohoe was the first Irish Minister for Finance to be elected to the role in July 2020. Under his Presidency, the Eurogroup dealt with challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and rising global inflation amongst other issues. Furthermore, Croatia introduced the euro currency in 2023 and Bulgaria is currently seeking to advance its case to join the Eurozone.
