We own, operate, build and maintain the natural gas network in Ireland and connect all customers to the gas network.

About us

Gas Networks Ireland operates and maintains Ireland’s €2.8bn, 14,725km national gas network, which is considered one of the safest and most modern renewables-ready gas networks in the world. Over 720,000 Irish homes and businesses trust Ireland’s gas network to provide efficient and reliable energy to meet their heating, cooking, manufacturing and transport needs. The gas network is the cornerstone of Ireland’s energy system, securely supplying more than 30% of Ireland’s total energy, including 40% of all heating and almost 50% of the country’s electricity generation. By working to replace natural gas with renewable gases, such as biomethane and hydrogen, and complementing intermittent renewable electricity, Gas Networks Ireland is supporting Ireland’s journey to a cleaner energy future.

AMBER Principal Investigator, Associate Professor Rocco Lupoi and Business Development Manager Daniel Knapper attended the H2IRL Conference 2024 13th - 14th November. This was an opportunity to highlight AMBER's current Hydrogen Project.   AMBER and Gas Networks Ireland joined forces to undertake important research to determine how compatible the materials that make up Ireland’s gas pipeline are with green hydrogen – an important first step for green hydrogen in the #decarbonisation journey of Ireland’s gas network. #materialsscience #advancedmaterials #materialsforenergy

It has been a significant day for Ireland’s renewable gas industry with both the 2024 HydrogenIreland Conference and the Energy Ireland Renewable Energy Summit taking place in Cork and Dublin respectively today.   Our Biomethane Programme Manager, Padraig Fleming, joined attendees in Croke Park to deliver his presentation entitled, “Transition of Ireland's Gas Supplies”.   In his address, Padraig outlined how biomethane can integrate seamlessly into our existing infrastructure, offering a powerful solution for decarbonising heat, transport, and industry.   Through collaborative efforts with stakeholders across the sector, we are working to develop the facilities needed to make biomethane production a sustainable and scalable reality for Ireland.   Gas Networks Ireland is proud to lead in the development of Ireland’s renewable gas potential. Together with our partners, we are advancing towards a decarbonised gas network and a sustainable energy future for all.   #RenewableEnergy #Biomethane #MovingIrelandsEnergy #RESummit

At Gas Networks Ireland, we're committed to leading the energy transformation in Ireland, and today, our CEO Cathal Marley took the stage at the 2024 HydrogenIreland Conference. Speaking on the panel titled Breaking Down the Barriers: Energy Leaders Session, Cathal joined other industry experts to discuss the vital steps required to accelerate Ireland's energy transition. During the discussion, Cathal outlined to delegates that Ireland’s gas network will be ready to safely transport green hydrogen as soon as the market is ready and there is sufficient production from offshore wind. Our Pathway to a Net Zero Carbon Network outlines our ambition to decarbonise the national gas network with renewable gases by 2045. We’re proud to be part of this transformative journey and look forward to the essential role that hydrogen and the gas network will play in achieving Ireland’s climate goals. #H2IRL2024 #MovingIrelandsEnergy

This week, our Chairperson Kevin Toland, CEO Cathal Marley, and members of the executive team Bobby Gleeson, Brian Sheehan, and Ian O'Flynn visited Scotland, to tour our compressor stations and engage with our SGN partners.   Ireland’s gas network is providing a safe and secure energy supply, and the visit provided an opportunity to evaluate current initiatives that are improving the resilience of these critical assets.   Ireland’s energy system is evolving and the gas network is playing a pivotal role: providing support for the deployment of renewable electricity generation and transport for renewable gases as they increase in volume over the coming years. Until we achieve the shared goal of a fully decarbonised energy system, it is important to recognise that Ireland’s energy system is reliant on the importation of gas at scale through our interconnectors from the UK.   Gas Networks Ireland is focused on supporting the transition to renewables, while simultaneously managing this key infrastructure to ensure our energy security and provide opportunities for continued economic growth and development.
