Research
Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC) is a SFI research centre for photonics, focusing on light-based technology.
About us
We are a Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) funded centre with a diverse team of over 200 researchers located across Ireland’s leading universities and institutes of technology, working together to deliver research excellence, transitioning this research into market leading products with industry partners, and training future photonics research leaders. IPIC is one of a network of SFI Research Centres focused on Ireland’s national priority research areas. Our outputs include 100 publications per year, with 40% in the top 10% journals, and over 20 PhD level trainees per year with over 60% departing to industry. Recent achievements include securing 37 awards in the highly competitive H2020 programme, representing an investment of €24M, and we have seen many of our technologies progress to market through companies such as Facebook Reality Labs, Agilent Technologies, Eblana Photonics and Rockley Photonics. We are always exploring new partnerships, both academic and industry, and new members to join our team, from PhDs to senior academic leaders.

We conclude another successful year for our Photonic Integration and Advanced Data Storage Centre for Doctoral Training students based at the Irish Photonic Integration Centre with two most recent viva successes. Huge congratulations to Dr Niall Boohan from Tyndall National Institute (supervisors Eoin O'Reilly, Brian Corbett) and Dr Rhianne Curley from Dublin City University (supervisor Tia Keyes) who achieved this important milestone in December 2024. Niall joined PIADS in 2019 and was working on: Modelling and Design of Feedback Insensitive Lasers. Rhianne joined us in 2020 and her PhD project was on: Precision targeted tumor responsive fluorophores: theranostic probes for real time biomarker sensing and for intraoperative fluorescence guided surgery. We wish you all great continued success! 🎉 🎉 🎉

Such a great event! Looking forward to next year already!
It was an honor to be one of the organizers for last week's 'Invisible Rainbows' talk at Tyndall National Institute in advance of International Day of LGBQTIA+ People in STEM, being celebrated today. As part of the Research Ireland-funded week-long SpaceFest, we brought together Pride in STEM founder Dr Alfredo Carpineti and Irish Photonic Integration Centre's Dr Fatima Gunning to talk about what the full spectrum of light shows us about our world and our universe, and about their careers into #EDI #advocacy, #mentorship and #visibility. The evening was facilitated by Jeanie Mac, MSc, who lead a fantastic discussion and an event-long round of photonics bingo. Definitely a highlight of the year!

We are delighted to be attending STEM South West with our partners MCCI You can find us at booth 17! Come learn all about #Photonics #Microelectronics and how you can be part of the future of technology. Tyndall National Institute University College Cork #STEMEducation #FutureOfSTEM #CareerExpo
The theme of this year's Expo is “The World Needs You: Solving Global Challenges with STEM”. The event will showcase how STEM careers and a STEM education can address real-world problems that impact climate change, healthcare, robotics, AI and medtech. An Tánaiste, Micheál Martin TD, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence speaking at the event launch, “This initiative continues to promote, empower and encourage young people to explore STEM opportunities across industry sectors that significantly contribute to our nation’s economic growth. Investment in knowledge has always been our greatest enabler and STEM South West - with its widespread industry and education partner base - is opening doors for our young people. I wish the organising team, the exhibitors and all of the visiting students, parents, teachers every success and an enjoyable immersive experience.” Mary Good, Chair, STEM South West commented, “ Ireland offers an incredible range of opportunities to students that choose to study STEM subjects. These subjects not only serve as the bedrock for so many careers but can also be the ticket for students and young graduates to explore the world, discover, learn and find new ways and means to make a positive impact on themselves and on the lives of others. Every step towards positive change matters as our global society faces critical issues around health, climate change, housing, energy and the very future of how we live and work. Investing in those that will hold the future in their hands, inspiring and equipping them to learn, lead and innovate is the right thing to do. The work that STEM South West is doing is necessary to ensure that our current STEM industry base is secure, that companies continue to locate in Ireland, that our start-ups and SMEs are given the opportunity to thrive, and that the students of today are given the skills to tackle the global challenges of tomorrow. STEM South West is driving a collective response to this – by showcasing the incredible range of opportunities that the STEM sector has to offer across the South West.” Visitors will get to explore exhibits from some of the biggest employers in the country, including Platinum Sponsors PepsiCo Ireland, Johnson & Johnson, Stryker, Gilead Sciences, Astellas Pharma, PM Group, Munster Technological University, University College Cork, Analog Devices, Horner APG Canada, VEX Robotics, Alcon, MTU Blackrock Castle Observatory and more.
