Last week we held our inaugural Biomaterials Forum at our IKON Global Innovation Centre, which explored ways to advance and harness the transformative potential of bio-based materials such as hemp and wood fibre, as well as biopolymers and bioprocessing, in the built environment. The event brought together leading industry experts, renowned academics and pioneering researchers to discuss innovative solutions to reduce embodied carbon and share insights on cutting edge biotechnology, sustainable retrofitting and the evolving EU landscape for the bio-based supply chain. Thank you to our guest speakers Ian Archer of BioConnect Innovation Centre, Stephen Barry-Hannon of Circular Bioeconomy Research Group (CIRCBIO), Patrick Daly and Paula Gallego of Circular Reno and Sean Douglas of BiOrbic, Bioeconomy SFI Research Centre. 'My role model was my grandfather, a man who was meant to be born and grow up in Texas, instead was born into the part of Ukraine then under the Russian empire, and who lived through both world war and Stalinist repressions, only to finally retire in Texas in his 80s, where he promptly learned English and loved flirting with waitresses and sales clerks. He never lost spark for life and had the most brilliant sense of humour about everything.'
