Yesterday the Financial Conduct Authority announced an extension until April 2025 of the deadline to comply with the Sustainability Disclosure Requirements (SDR) aimed at tackling greenwashing. Whilst firms still have to submit applications to comply by 1st October 2024, they now have longer to make the necessary reporting and disclosure requirements. European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has published an opinion on enhancing the Sustainable Finance Framework, highlighting potential long-term improvements. As long as investors are provided with clear and transparent disclosure they should be free to choose. All too often, however, that is not the case. Of greater concern is the fact that many funds do not manage to their own investment guidelines and marketing. Clear greenwashing. European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) has published its report detailing the results of compliance reviews by regulators in the region which has raised concerns about various issues including greenwashing. An issue or area of improvement which was reported included that firms that did not have specific controls such as consistency checks in place to check sustainability related claims. It was also reported that some firms were not publishing sustainability claims relating to third-party products as they would not always have the data or be able to verify it.
