Many orphan devices provide essential functions for patients with rare diseases, their carers, and the healthcare professionals using them. At the same time, many patients and carers express a substantial unmet need for new paediatric devices for their conditions. As such, this initiative will support the development of paediatric and orphan devices via two steps. The EC-funded DeCODe (development of child and orphan devices) consortium is set to change this. DeCODe - which Trinity College is a member - aims to catalyse innovation and address the unique healthcare needs of people living with rare diseases (PLWRD), specifically children. Scientists from the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute and Princeton University, led by Lydia Lynch and Aaron Douglas have identified an immune molecule that keeps metabolism in tune and on time. Their research reveals that the immune system interacts with the body’s internal clock, influencing both fat storage and temperature regulation, which hints at why shift workers and others with irregular work, eating, or sleep patterns driven by the demands of modern life fall out of metabolic sync. The discovery may hold potential for developing therapies to address obesity and prevent wasting. Read more at: https://lnkd.in/dPJeAF82

It’s official, Taoiseach has confirmed that general election will take place on 29th November. With 77 nursing homes closing since 2018 and over 2,800 beds lost, Nursing Homes Ireland are urging the public to press the Government in the General Election to prioritise nursing home care for the public good. With our ageing population growing rapidly, it’s something to celebrate. But ensuring the sustainability of the nursing home sector must be a priority for Government, families, and communities. Acting now will prevent future heartbreak. Nursing Homes Ireland campaign is to spark the national conversation needed to secure the future of nursing home care for older people in Ireland.
