  • Sometimes, one phone call can change everything. It was 2006, and Jack Murray was a year into running MediaHQ. Back then, we published The Irish Media Contacts Directory—a printed book that PR teams relied on for finding journalists. But let’s be honest, it wasn’t perfect. Keeping it updated was a nightmare. By the time the ink dried, some contacts had already moved on. Jack knew it wasn’t sustainable, but he didn’t know the next step. That’s when he got a call from Ken Robertson, the first-ever “Head of Mischief” at Paddy Power. After ordering a couple of copies of the directory, Ken said something that stopped Jack in his tracks tracks: "Would you ever do me a favour? Stop publishing the book and make a digital directory instead. We’ll be your first customer." Jack remembers putting the phone down and staring at his hand. It was one of those moments where everything shifts. Ken’s words were simple but game-changing. At the time, Jack didn’t know much about technology, but he knew the PR industry inside out. He started asking himself hard questions: Why do people need us? What problem are we solving? The answer? PR teams needed a way to make and shape the news agenda without spending hours on grunt work like data entry and list building. A printed book wasn’t going to cut it anymore. Within a year, we launched MediaHQ as a digital platform. It wasn’t easy—there were cash flow struggles and sleepless nights—but we built something that truly solved a problem. Today, MediaHQ connects PR teams to the right journalists, podcasters, and influencers with speed and precision. And it all started with a phone call from someone brave enough to challenge the status quo. Thanks, Ken, for that nudge. And to all entrepreneurs: listen closely when someone points out a better way. It might just change your life.

  • “The idea that you have to build and maintain your own media listsis a total pain in the arse.” When Graeme McQueen joined daa's communications team, he quickly realised the value of MediaHQ. 🎙️ “I came into comms from journalism in 2014 and was presented with MediaHQ. I’ve learned to love it. It’s become an essential part of how we work. • “It’s like having someone on it the whole time.” That's what media relations using MediaHQ is like. Keeping media contacts up-to-date is one of the most time-consuming jobs in PR. It’s not glamorous, but it’s essential. Without accurate, reliable media lists, your campaigns fall apart—emails bounce, journalists are missed, and your story doesn’t get told. Donna Parsons, PR & Advocacy Director at THINKHOUSE, shares why MediaHQ has become an essential tool for her team: 🎙️ “It’s extremely useful. At the fundamental level, it’s keeping accurate updates of media—who they are, where they are, what their contact details are. Without MediaHQ, it would be someone’s full-time job. It’s easy to underestimate how important that is—until you don’t have it.” MediaHQ works like an extension of your team—automating the heavy lifting so you can focus on strategy, creativity, and results. • When you start out, you just want someone to be brave enough to take a chance on you. 15 years ago, the first version of the MediaHQ software went live, and we took a leap into the unknown. We asked PR professionals to take a leap of faith—put down the printed media directory book they’d relied on for decades and embrace technology to transform media relations. And they did. Trócaire, Barnardos Ireland, Health Research Board (HRB), daa, the European Parliament, Paddy Power, University of Galway, World Vision Ireland, Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s, Skillnet Ireland, Enable Ireland, South East Technological University, University College Cork, Bothar, and Dogs Trust were the first 15 organisations to trust us. Their belief in an ambitious Irish start-up laid the foundation for everything MediaHQ has become today. In the 15 years since, we’ve grown, evolved, and innovated. But their bravery and trust continue to inspire us. To those who took that chance 15 years ago: thank you. Stay tuned as we share more about their journeys—and how MediaHQ continues to help PR teams tell better stories, reach wider audiences, and drive more impact. (This is me back at the start with the late great Mike Burns who founded the Irish Media Contacts Directory which I bought in 2006. #MediaHQ #15Years #PRInnovation #MediaRelations #Storytelling #IrishStartUp
