She is regarded as one of the foremost Dutch still life painters and she had a long and established career that spanned from the late-seventeenth to the mid-eighteenth centuries. Watch Curator of Dutch and Flemish Art Dr Lizzie Marx talk about what makes this painting special, and see if you can spot the slightly nibbled leaf! This painting is currently on loan as part of the Rachel Ruysch, Nature into Art exhibition at the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, we'll let you know when it comes back from its travels! • We first opened our doors on this day in 1864, exactly 5 years and a day after the foundation stone was laid, which means we are 161 years old today. On that day, there were 130 works on display, and 17,453 people came through our turnstiles in the first three weeks. Entrance was free (as it is now), except on Fridays and Saturdays when the Gallery was “reserved for artists and students”, members of the public who wanted to visit on those days had to pay sixpence. Surprisingly, children under 5 were not allowed to visit at all in the early days! 💡These drawings are by architect Francis Fowke and are available to download free of charge from our Images website 👉 https://lnkd.in/gXTQqkJS #NationalGalleryIRL

  • We're delighted that The Liffey Swim is back home with us after its travels the past few months! The much loved painting won artist Jack B. Yeats Ireland's first Olympic medal at the 1924 Paris Olympics. In the early modern Olympic games, art, literature and sculpture competitions were also held, rewarding arts inspired by sport. Visit The Liffey Swim in Room 14 the next time you're in the Gallery! Image: Jack B. Yeats (1871-1957), The Liffey Swim, 1923. Presented, Trustees of the Haverty Trust, 1931.
