Tackling the world's population health challenges through research, education & collaboration
About us
The RCSI School of Population Health works to enhance human health through understanding, safeguarding and improving the health of populations through research, education and synergistic collaborations. Building on an RCSI tradition in public health that stretches back to 1841, the School of Population Health was established in 2022 and brings together epidemiologists, data scientists, biostatisticians, public health professionals, health economists and health behavioural scientists. Reflecting the convergent nature of population health science, the School consists of academic departments and research units in public health and epidemiology, health psychology, data science, healthcare outcomes, and global surgery. The School has a diverse portfolio of population health research, a structured PhD programme (SPHeRE) and spearheads population health education at undergraduate and postgraduate level across the university.

We're recruiting for two postdoctoral researchers to work on the WiseFood project, which aims to develop smart digital applications to empower citizens in making healthier and more sustainable food choices. By leveraging advanced AI techniques, the research team plans to create tools that offer reliable, personalised and contextually relevant food information. It is hoped that these applications will be user-friendly and seamlessly integrate into everyday life, without requiring specialised IT skills. A human-in-the-loop approach, involving nutrition experts, will ensure that solutions align with national policies and guidelines. The project will involve Living Labs in Ireland, Hungary and Slovenia, supporting people to eat healthier, make environmentally friendly food choices, and become more informed and conscious about their food habits. WiseFood is funded by EU Horizon Europe. The closing date for application is 12 January 2025. We have two exciting opportunities as postdoctoral research fellow and research assistant to work on a project developing a model for integrating participatory approaches into population-based health needs assessment in Ireland. As part of the implementation of new health regions under Sláintecare, Ireland will be moving towards a more population-based model of service planning for health needs. This project will provide a vehicle for bringing community perspectives into health planning, using methods that are feasible for the Health Service Executive going forward. These posts are funded under the Health Research Board (HRB) Applied Partnership Award with the HSE. The closing date for both positions is 12 January 2025. Less than 12% of the world’s surgical workforce lives in Africa, and women remain vastly underrepresented. The 2025 Women in Surgery (WiSURG) Research Grant aims to change that. At #COSECSA2025 we joined with Women in Surgery Africa and COSECSA | The College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa, with support from the Johnson & Johnson Foundation, to celebrate the seven remarkable women who received this year’s WiSURG Research Grant and their work to advance impactful surgical research in the region. The grant will provide $7,500 in support as well as training and mentorship opportunities for the seven awardees, helping improve surgical research capacity on the continent. Congratulations to this year’s awardees!
