Shelbourne Football Club

On Friday, Shelbourne Football Club became Champions of Ireland. A first crown in 18 years. Some of my happiest memories in my life come from following the fortunes of the club, which I fell in love with in 1996. We paid the price for the success of the late 90s and early 00s. From the brink of extinction in 2006, a dark decade (and the rest) spent mostly in the hopeless first division. Crowds declined and it seemed like this Dublin Institution could be consigned to the history books at any moment. Damien Duff came in and vowed to transform the football club. He’s done it. He brought back hope, raised the standards and lead Shelbourne FC back to the very top. We’ve come a long way from 500 / 600 people we’d get during the very dark days. It’s great not being able to recognise every face in Tolka Park, as the club has grown exponentially over recent years. It was beautiful to see those faces of the people who stood by the club through its darkest days on Friday. Faces etched with the purest joy, faces with relief, smiles and tears. A happy ending for Shels, made even sweeter because I got to share it with my brother Ben, who was there almost exclusively for the dark days. We’re blessed to have an incredible group of people giving their all for the football club. Players, coaches, staff and volunteers on and off the pitch who’s hard work, dedication and drive, all working together to help put Shels back where we belong.

3 years ago when I returned from Australia, David O'Connor & the board of Shelbourne asked me to get involved with the club and it's plans to take Shelbourne back to the top of Irish football within the next 5 years. 3 years later and here we are. There are a lot of people around the club that deserve mentions, I'd be all day trying to list them out. But the fundamental point has always been this - we have good people, who work hard as a tight unit and we were determined to reach our goal. I've not got much tears or energy left since Friday. The best weekend I think I've ever had and I am so, so happy for our amazing fans and volunteers around the club who have stuck by when times were not so good. We will continue to grow together. 𝗥𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝗹𝗸𝗮 🔙 Shelbourne FC legend Dave Rogers returned to Tolka Park this week. A League of Ireland winner with the Reds in 2003, 2004, and 2006. Rogers scored one of the most iconic goals in Shels history. The former defender spoke to Steven Doody about that goal against Hajduk Split 20 years ago, and his thoughts on the current crop of Shels players. 𝗥𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 🔴 Shelbourne FC’s Social Inclusion Team aims to offer football for all. Now in its fourth year, the team caters for adults of all ages with a range of intellectual disabilities. The programme is headed up by Anne Murray and Shelbourne FC’s Public Affairs and Inclusion Officer Finian McGrath. Working closely with St Michaels House, the programme has more than 60 players at present. The focus is on the person’s ability, not their disability.
