🎤 Redefining Energy TECH - Ep41: The HVDC Grid Revolution (1/2) #applepodcast https://lnkd.in/ekHZU8Mt #spotify https://lnkd.in/ehJpYYmp Michael Barnard invites John Fitzgerald, the CEO of SuperNode Ltd. John delves into the transformative potential of energy transmission technologies and the critical role of interconnectors in shaping the future of renewable energy. Drawing from his extensive background in engineering and utility management, Fitzgerald recounts his journey in the energy sector, which includes developing power stations, trading over interconnectors, and spearheading the East West Interconnector project between Ireland and the UK. His leadership at Supernode reflects his commitment to advancing superconducting transmission technology as a solution to modern energy challenges. Fitzgerald discusses the inherent limitations of alternating current (AC) transmission, particularly for underground and underwater cables, and highlights the advantages of direct current (DC) technology for long-distance energy distribution. He explains the technical intricacies of DC systems, including their capacity to manage inertia and integrate non-synchronous renewable energy. Throughout the episode, Fitzgerald emphasizes the need to address public consultation challenges in infrastructure projects to ensure the successful deployment of energy transmission networks. A central theme of the conversation is the evolving role of interconnectors. Once primarily used to exploit price differences between energy markets, interconnectors are now crucial for balancing variable renewable energy across regions. Fitzgerald explores the immense potential of continental-scale grids in Europe and advocates for tripling grid capacity to meet future energy demands. He also highlights ground-breaking projects like SunCable, which aims to connect Australia to Singapore, and the North Atlantic Transmission One - Link project, which envisions transatlantic power transmission, underscoring the benefits of intercontinental energy connectivity for enhancing energy security. The episode concludes with a forward-looking perspective on the energy transition. Fitzgerald calls for greater investment in #HVDC technology, praises China's advancements in this area, and urges listeners to stay informed about opportunities to integrate renewables through interconnectors. By fostering interconnected grids, he argues, the global energy landscape can achieve greater efficiency, resilience, and sustainability.

⚡The Clean Industrial Deal must support the mass deployment of innovative grid technologies to unleash the full potential of Europe’s electricity grid at the lowest cost to consumers ⚡ Europe has rightly recognized that electricity grids have a crucial role in decarbonising its economy, in achieving energy independence, and driving competitiveness. CurrENT is now calling for urgent action on the deployment of innovative grid technologies to unleash the full potential of Europe’s electricity grid at the lowest cost to consumers. Innovative grid technologies include grid-enhancing technologies that get more out of the existing grid, technologies that enable operation of a power system with a high penetration of renewables, and high-capacity conductors that offer up to ten times the transfer capacity of traditional conductors and significantly reduce network losses. It is essential that electricity grids feature prominently in the Clean Industrial Deal. CurrENT recommends policymakers include the following key elements: ⚡A strategy for the mass deployment of innovative grid technologies in Europe  🎯 Specific and SMART grid targets to measure whether Europe is on track to deliver the grids needed (e.g. decreasing the curtailment of renewables, decreasing the cost of grid capacity expansion in EUR per GW-km, increasing grid capacity in GW-km, increasing the efficient use of the grid, reducing losses, and decreasing raw materials per GW-km).   💶 Financing mechanisms to support the mass deployment of innovative grid technologies such as benefit-sharing incentives, financial guarantees, and dedicated grid technology calls under the Innovation Fund and other research and innovation programmes.  📈 Anticipatory investments that look at fully decarbonised scenarios and that are guided by the NOVA principle, prioritising the optimisation and reinforcement of the existing network over grid expansion while promoting and demonstrating new high capacity and high efficiency conductor technology.  These recommendations give Europe a realistic chance to decarbonize the power system before 2040, which will be needed to reach net zero by 2050. The video from the presentations and panel from the book launch for Eddie O'Connor's and Kevin O'Sullivan's book Supergrid Super Solution is now available and the book is available for pre-order. Amazing panel with an EU energy minister, MEP, leading journalists and industry professionals. Here is the transcript of my closing remarks, which I maintain are choices the EU should make. Video and pre-order options: https://lnkd.in/ghpfBj4h I have a modest proposal — since this is an Irish crowd, I can use that term — for how the EU could save a lot of money to put toward electrical transmission and the energy transformation: stop wasting time on hydrogen for energy. I compare and contrast with China, which has electrified all its transportation extensively with electricity and no hydrogen. They’ve barely implemented hydrogen. They have 600,000 electric buses, about a million electric trucks, and 46,000 kilometers of electrified high-speed rail. There’s no hydrogen to speak of—fewer than 10,000 hydrogen vehicles in the entire country. Stop wasting time and money on it. The EU has already wasted 25 years on that dead end. China also has the most electrified heavy industry in the world, and once again, no hydrogen. BASF just commissioned a plant in Shanghai, one of their big integrated chemical plants. It’s producing a sixth of the emissions because it’s electrified. Those emissions will decrease further as China’s electricity grid decarbonizes. Stop wasting money on the dead end of hydrogen for energy. We need to focus on fixing hydrogen as an industrial feedstock, but Europe is wasting enormous resources on it as an energy solution. The second point is carbon capture and sequestration. Europe is proposing 19,000 kilometers of CO2 pipelines for waste. Instead, electrify and don’t emit—it’s much cheaper. Europe is wasting a lot of time, energy, and proposing to spend an enormous amount of money on two dead ends that won’t move the climate needle. Free up the resources from these areas and allocate them more effectively. #climateaction #winning #solutions
