Turning Teens Towards STEM
About us
Teen-Turn aims to influence course decision-making processes, inform participants on education and career options, and combat stereotypes by strategically changing how girls identify with STEM career environments through work placements and after school activities. As learning in the presence of female role models has been shown to impact girls’ self-image and confidence–encouraging them to see themselves in new ways and stimulate new interests–female company representatives mentor Teen-Turn participants, perpetuating interest and enthusiasm. More girls exploring and gaining an interest in STEM will lead to more women earning STEM qualifications, thus meeting a demand for skills that is currently outpacing supply. A technology economy is unsustainable, otherwise.

36 projects completed during our autumn afterschool programme "Project Squad" from 10 schools in 5 counties are competing at BT Young Scientist Exhibition this week. They represent one third of Project Squad's project output. With the research work done and judging in play, we are contributing support via 30 hotel rooms for the week and loud cheers from our frozen "outposts" nationwide. Celebrating #Innovation at SciFest: Teen-Turns Project Squad 2024 🗓️Last Saturday, we wrapped up this year's Teen-Turn Project Squad with a fantastic SciFest event at the IBM Campus in Dublin. Over the past three months, teenage #girls from schools across Ireland have been working on their own projects and business ideas. They journeyed from idea creation through research, problem-solving, and proof of concept development. The more than 80 projects exhibited showcased incredible thoughtfulness, creativity, and #entrepreneurship. Here are just a few highlights: 💡Eco-Friendly Packaging: Substituting plastic packaging with environmentally friendly seaweed-based alternatives. 💡Waste Tracking System: Developing a system and mobile app to monitor household consumption and waste behavior, aiming to reduce food waste. 💡Health Impact of Processed Food: Investigating how processed food affects physical and mental health. 💡Biological Solution for Pollution: Creating a biological method to decrease heavy metal pollution. 💡Fake Tanning Trend: Examining the fake tanning trend among teenagers in Ireland, its behaviors, and impacts. 🙏🏾It was especially nice to have Nathan Cullen, GM of IBM Ireland, and journalist and broadcaster Elaine Burke as speakers. Their inspiring afternoon keynotes added great value to the event. ✨We are incredibly proud of all the participants and their innovative solutions. The future is bright with such talented young #female minds #leading the way into a bright #STEM future! 🙌🏾 And what a great volunteering community with alot of CWiT Ireland (Connecting Women in Technology) representatives from Microsoft HPE GROUP CarTrawler IBM and Accenture Olesja Darnopiha Vanessa Gallogly Emma Shanks Mariela Milanova Ríona McIlraith Miriam Krafzick Dahab Sharaby Tracey Martin

Congratulations to Teen-Turn who had four winners from their Project Squad programme at SciFest CLG last weekend. The contestants benefitted from our very own Designer-in-Residence, Dr. Glenn Curtin expertise as a judge and awarded two junior prize category projects, Robotics Kits attributed to The Digital Hub's ongoing support of Teen-Turn's work. Two of the Best Journey prize winners were girls who completed their projects at the Friday sessions in The Digital Hub. The Digital Hub are delighted to play a small role in facilitating such an important initiative and wish to congratulate Teen-Turn and the contestants on their success. Last Saturday, I found my tribe. ✨ IBM hosted the TEEN TURN event, bringing together 150 talented teenage girls to showcase their STEM projects. 👩💻🎉 It was a day filled with: ⚡Energy 🎨 Creativity, and 🤝 Camaraderie An incredible initiative to inspire more girls to pursue careers in STEM. 🚀 I had the honor of volunteering alongside amazing teammates: Olesja, Jane, Matteo, Elisabeth, and others. 💙 But for me, it resonated on a much deeper level. Here is why: I saw those girls cheering each other on and celebrating their wins together. It was heartwarming—and it healed something in me. 💖 Younger Aba, who sat in classrooms of 30 students with only 3 girls, often felt like an outsider. Back then, technical courses were dominated by: 🕶️ “Matrix-lookalikes”, 🎸 “rock fans”, and 🎮 video game enthusiasts . I didn’t see myself in anyone around me. There were no initiatives like this to help girls find their space in STEM. 🚀 I often wonder: What if there had been? Would my trajectory have been different? 🤷♀️ But on Saturday, I realized something. As I watched those girls lift each other up, I felt an overwhelming sense of belonging. 🤗 My “girlhood” wasn’t lost—it was right here, with me: ❄️ On a chilly December Saturday, 🤝 Volunteering with women and men I had just met, 💪 Working tirelessly (and unpaid), Cheering for girls we may never meet again. It was exhausting—15,000 steps and a couple of blisters later 👟🥲—we wrapped up the day. But it was worth it. Because on that day, I healed Younger Aba 💜. And I found my tribe. 🫶 To those girls: - Keep cheering for each other, - Keep lifting each other up. To my fellow volunteers: Thank you for being my crew. 💙 Together, we are making a difference. 🌟 Video from my talented colleague Peter Siobhan, CWiT Ireland (Connecting Women in Technology), Nathan, IBM, SciFest CLG, Deborah Threadgold John, Sven, Beatriz, Bill, Helen

Looking forward to seeing the project posters, inventions, and R&D presentations at this weekend's Project Squad Finale, which is a SciFest event! Shout out to the universities, who held the end-of-season Super Sessions. Getting participants better acclimated to third level environments and becoming familiar with campuses is critical for 'fitting in' and mindset in the future! For me #volunteering truly means: a continuous #engagement with a cause close to my #heart, making a tangible #impact ✨ For the past two years, I’ve dedicated regular time to volunteer as a mentor and coach for young girls from diverse and disadvantaged backgrounds. These young women are on the cusp of graduation, about to embark on their journeys into adulthood, professional life, and careers 🔝 I am proud to be involved in two impactful programs: STEM Passport for Inclusion and Teen-Turn. While different, both programs share common goals: ⭐️Educating girls on practical Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) topics. ⭐️Empowering them to lead their own projects, develop business ideas, create products, and confidently present their work. ⭐️Access to professionals from various companies, roles and backgrounds, their career journey and current role The most valuable part of these programs is the connection I build with the girls: becoming an ally who shows appreciation and interest in them, believes in their potential, and makes a lasting positive impact through meaningful interactions💡 Through this volunteering, I've not only contributed to the growth of many girls, but also developed my own skills further. This experience has broadened my perspective on inclusive education and the importance of investing in the younger generation. It grounds me regularly, especially in the middle of my busy days at Microsoft, and reminds me of what truly matters 🙏🏽 Interested to start 2025 with volunteering for Teen-Turn or STEM Passport for Inclusion? Congratulations to our alum Orlaith, who was awarded the Teen-Turn affiliated Trane Technologies Thermoking scholarship, which will support her studies over the course of her four-year engineering degree at Atlantic Technological University (ATU) Galway City. Orlaith is with us 6+ years now, having joined our programming in 1st year! Through Teen-Turn afterschool activities like Technovation, Project Squad, and Saturday PLUS Physics & Robotics, Orlaith has built up a real skillset in STEM and developed a keen interest in engineering. She even participated in work experience at Trane Technologies in the summer before 5th year, so it's all coming full circle! And, if that weren't news enough, she also was honoured with a National Garda Community Safety Award for a project she created as part of our programming! Bravo!
