About us
Transport Infrastructure Ireland's role as a state agency is to provide sustainable transport infrastructure and services, deliver a better quality of life, support economic growth, and respect the environment. Under the aegis of the Department of Transport, we work at both national and regional level, in partnership with Local Authorities regarding national roads and greenways, and the National Transport Authority (NTA) regarding light rail and metro. 🗣️ We were delighted to see Sean Sweeney, MetroLink Director, present at the European Infrastructure Conference in Dublin earlier this month. Cathal Masterson, TII’s Director of Commercial Operations, also participated, taking part in a ‘Connecting Ireland’ panel at the conference. 👏 Well done to all involved!
MetroLink Programme Director Sean Sweeney, was delighted to take to the stage at the PwC Ireland European Infrastructure Conference for a fireside chat with PwC's Capital Projects & Infrastructure Lead Robert Costello at the Clayton Hotel, Ballsbridge, Dublin. Dr. Sweeney shared compelling insights into how major infrastructure projects like MetroLink are critical to addressing Dublin's congestion challenges. He highlighted how MetroLink will: - Enable housing development by improving connectivity. - Reduce reliance on cars, making our roads safer for those who must drive. - Deliver a transformative public transport system that Dublin urgently needs. As Dr. Sweeney emphasised, MetroLink is not a luxury but a necessity, and the cost of inaction is simply not an option. Thank You PwC Ireland for hosting such an engaging event and for the opportunity to discuss the pivotal role MetroLink will play in shaping Dublin's sustainable future. To everyone who participated, thank you for being part of the conversation. 💡 November has been a busy month for peer exchanges and knowledge sharing collaboration in TII. Members from TII Network Asset Management, GIS and IT teams hosted a two-day workshop at TII Offices in Park Gate Street, Dublin with a group of 8 delegates from the Danish Road Directorate. The workshop focused on modernising Asset Management Systems and Solutions across a range of assets including pavement and bridges. Last Week Gerard O'Dea from our Network Management Team attended a two-day workshop with a Nordic User group hosted by Transpordiamet - Estonian Transport Administration in Tallinn Estonia. The Nordic user group which includes delegates from Estonia, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Norway, and now Ireland, meet regularly to discuss various topics relating to Pavement Asset Management. Topics discussed in Tallinn included KPI reporting, defining benefits, maintenance backlog assessment as well as data collection, management and visualisation. 🌉 Delegates were also invited to attend the ‘blowing up of the Kanama Viaduct’. This was a joint exercise carried out by the Estonian Defence Forces and Transpordiamet - Estonian Transport Administration. The demolition makes way for the reconstruction of a new bridge on the Tallinn-Pärnu highway to cater for future load bearing requirements necessary for transporting military equipment and oversized loads. 🚊 Following government approval in October, Transport Infrastructure Ireland has today submitted a Railway Order planning application for Luas Finglas to An Bord Pleanála. 🚉 Luas Finglas is a major public transport project that will extend the existing Luas tram network northwards by almost 4km from Broombridge to the Finglas area, with stops at St Helena’s, Finglas Village, St Margaret’s Road, and Charlestown near the M50. The route will provide interchanges with Broombridge train station which is on the planned DART+ West line, as well as bus services. TII has an excellent track record delivering Luas for Dublin city and passenger demand has exceeded all projections, so this extension will be an excellent addition to the Dublin transport network. 👁️🗨️ You can find out more about the project at www.luasfinglas.ie , watch the Luas Finglas animated fly-through here: https://lnkd.in/dYZPfU6H and the Railway Order drawings and documents can be explored at at www.luasfinglasro.ie. You can make a submission about Luas Finglas application to An Bord Pleanála from 22 November 2024 to 20 January 2025. Project Update 🏞️ TII recently commissioned the development of a biodiversity accounting tool. This initiative supports biodiversity recovery at a local and national level whilst developing and maintaining a safe and reliable transport infrastructure network. This project reflects TII’s ambitions to embed biodiversity into all aspects of its project design, operations and decision making. #Biodiversity #Sustainability #EnvironmentalImpact
How can we account for the impact of transport projects on nature? We’ve developed a biodiversity accounting tool for Transport Infrastructure Ireland to support decision-making for route appraisal. The tool makes it possible to assess the impact of future route options on nature and to report on them once implemented. Applicable at an organisational scale, this will allow TII to contribute to nature restoration on their estate and prepare for biodiversity reporting.
