Legendary actor and activist Jeremy Irons celebrated at UCC Addressing the ceremony, Irons called for a greater emphasis on the importance of Arts and Humanities in secondary education in Ireland. UCC researcher to lead project investigating legacy of Vikings in Europe Congratulations to Dr Tom Birkett on receiving a prestigious €2m European Research Council (ERC) grant to map the complex legacy of the Vikings in Europe. Dr Birkett, Senior Lecturer in Old English and Old Norse, said: “I am excited to lead a project that takes on such a big challenge and that hopes to get people involved in mapping the Vikings across Europe. The Vikings are popular for a reason, and this project hopes to find out why, and what impact this period of history has on our politics, our culture, and our European identity." Professor Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin's legacy celebrated The life and legacy of Professor Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin will be celebrated at the Society for Music Education in Ireland’s annual conference. Starting in UCC today, the SMEI conference will celebrate the launch of ‘Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin: A Life in Music’, an illustrated volume which captures his wide-ranging influence as an educator, performer, composer and cultural personality. Thousands of students were influenced by Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin - UCC graduate, lecturer and former Head of the UCC Department of Music - through his pioneering work in Irish traditional music and the performing arts.
