With the RIAI Architecture Awards 2025 submission deadline fast approaching, we are profiling our specialist categories today - Universal Design and Sustainability - which are both free to enter. As part of our commitment to climate change action and the principles of inclusion and universal design, all entrants are asked to describe how their design has considered sustainability and universal design. This year, you can easily enter these categories in addition to another category by checking the ‘opt-in’ box on the first page of the online form. The Universal Design award, for projects that have demonstrated excellence in Universal Design, is developed in partnership with The Centre for Excellence in Universal Design (CEUD) at the National Disability Authority (NDA). The 2023 Universal Design Award was won by Beyond the Trees Avondale by van Dijk Architects & Stoeger + Koelbl Architekten, an exemplar visitor experience within the grounds of Avondale House & Forest Park, featuring a fully accessible tree-top walk and viewing tower, and an orientation space, café, shop, exhibition space and pavilion with universal access for all age groups and abilities. For the sustainability category, the Jury is looking for projects that have demonstrated particular innovation and excellence in sustainable design. Entrants are asked to comment on biodiversity; comfort, health and wellbeing; operational energy use, embodied carbon; water; and social sustainability; and are encouraged to submit key metrics, where relevant and obtainable. Last year, the sustainability category was won by the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications Headquarters by the Office of Public Works. This is an excellent example of a large-scale retrofit that has achieved great operational energy improvements, making an important contribution to climate change action. Our Dundalk team continue to impress with their progress at Gullion Park. This 142 apartment scheme on the periphery of the town will provide much needed homes to the people of Dundalk. As the photos illustrate, construction is taking place across five blocks, each built with precast frames. Two blocks are now extant with the other three following closely behind. Partitioning and first fix M&E are underway in the smaller blocks with local drainage also underway throughout the site. Wood Awards Ireland (WAI) organized by Forest Industries Ireland (FII) celebrate excellence in wood design and construction. The 2024 awards marked the 10th anniversary of this prestigious event. Together with FII, we are delighted to champion sustainable design and innovation, showcasing how wood transforms spaces while reducing our environmental footprint. The winning and shortlisted projects explore the intrinsic physical properties of wood, while also developing the inherent relationship between form, technology. This week, van Dijk Architects won the prize for Innovation at the Wood Awards Ireland for our project, Junction 20. Our win follows on from our previous success at the Wood Awards in 2023, where van Dijk Architects’ highly acclaimed ‘Beyond the Trees’, Avondale House won two awards for Innovation and the Large Scale Public Building Award. On November 6th, Jan Van Dijk and Edward McKeown will present recent educational projects by Van Dijk Architects at the Education Buildings Ireland Conference & Exhibition 2024. They will be speaking at a session called Inclusive Schools: SEN Reconfiguration and Adaptive Re-use of school accommodation. Van Dijk Architects are currently part of the National SEN Roll-Out and the Framework for Consultancy Services for Large School Projects.
