Updates

  • As we enter 2025, let's celebrate a number that holds special significance for refractive surgeons: 20/25. This number represents functional vision, a milestone that signifies clarity and capability. While our ultimate goal is to achieve a perfect 20/20 vision and often surpass it with 20/16 or better, 20/25 is a remarkable achievement in its own right. Did you know 20/25 vision is good enough to fly a commercial aeroplane? It’s a testament that while perfection is ideal, excellence is sufficient to soar to great heights. So, as we embark on this new year, let's aim for a smooth take-off and a journey filled with success, joy, and clarity. Here's to 2025 being your best year yet! And remember, attitude determines altitude.

Transforming lives by transforming vision. Consultant Ophthalmologist, Specialist Cataract & Refractive Surgeon, Clinical Associate Professor, Non-Executive Director

2024 marked a big year in ophthalmology when 75 years of history converged with groundbreaking digital innovation. This was the year we didn't just celebrate past achievements; we reimagined the future of vision care.   Every milestone this year reinforced my core belief: technological advancement means little without its ability to improve the human experience. When #wavelightplus, with its revolutionary 3D digital twin eye modelling and #ICLGuru for accurate sizing, was launched, it wasn't just about surgical precision - it was about giving people clearer, more hopeful visions of their future.   Receiving the Fyodorov Award in Athens was a humbling reminder of our field's incredible journey. As I stood where LASIK's origins were celebrated, I was struck by a fundamental truth: we're not just correcting vision but restoring possibility.   "Fyodorov Award in Athens" - Honoring surgical pioneers. "Thank you to ΕΕΕΦΔΧ HSIOIRS for one of my best days ever as a refractive surgeon!" https://lnkd.in/emN_2CKA "Gratitude for Professional Recognition" - A moment to reflect on our core mission. "May we prioritise our duty and responsibility to our patients." https://lnkd.in/eu-S_Dej   "3D Digital Twin Eye Innovation" - The future of personalized surgical care "Testing before treating. Perfecting before placing." https://lnkd.in/ebwSEUwX   I was reminded of why we do what we do as refractive surgeons in the most beautiful way. And that goes for all involved in the process: our team at the Wellington Eye Clinic, our manufacturing partners, our service engineers, and our referral network. https://lnkd.in/eca6rgGw   Celebrating the invention of the IOL in style in London at #UKISCRS2024. https://lnkd.in/eip2XvkS   Milestones this year included: • Celebrating our first year of working together, Brendan Cummings. It's such a joy • Celebrating 26 years at Wellington Eye Clinic • Participating in the European launch of cutting-edge WaveLight technology • Doubling our #ICL numbers thanks to #ICLGuru • Being part of the movement that is Ophthalpreneurs • Joining the Ocumetra board • Marking five extraordinary years as Non-Executive Director at Alcon    As we enter 2025, the convergence of digital innovation, technology and surgical expertise promises to revolutionize vision care. Our commitment remains unwavering: to leverage technological advances to serve human potential.   To my colleagues at Wellington Eye Clinic, Alcon, Ocumetra, World College of Refractive Surgery, all the Societies and the global ophthalmology community - your dedication continues to inspire. And to our patients, you are why we persist, innovate, and dream. https://lnkd.in/eeZ76nsc

  • We are pleased to have access to this wonderful addition to our list of procedures to help improve near vision without the use of spectacles. The fact that Allotex (Tissue Addition Technology or TAT) is reversible is a significant advantage. Not that we have reversed many procedures. Most people simply love the results.

Returning from a once-in-a-lifetime event like the #UKISCRS2024 celebration of the 75th anniversary of Sir Harold Ridley’s invention of the intraocular lens (IOL) evokes a mix of emotions. On one hand, there’s immense gratitude for being part of such a remarkable field of medicine. On the other, there’s a sense of humility when considering the profound impact of Sir Harold’s invention, which has benefited nearly a billion eyes since 1949. Imagine my delight when I found an envelope on my desk this morning, eloquently illustrating the impact we have on our patients' lives through our daily work. While not everyone can express it as beautifully as this person did, the undeniable impact is clear. We should be immensely grateful for the ability to help our patients in this way, thanks to inventions and visionaries like Sir Harold Ridley, who have changed the course of humanity. We may not have the impact that Sir Ridley did, but collectively, by changing lives on a daily basis, we help extend his brilliance for decades to come. And huge thanks to the Wellington Eye Clinic team members for their roles in moving patients to the point of writing such heartfelt and emotional thoughts. We are all moved and humbled by these beautiful words "You have not only changed how I see the world, but how I see myself."

  • Creating media attention for this highly anticipated technology is very appropriate. We’ve had it for 6 months at the Wellington Eye Clinic and the results are spectacular. Creating a digital twin of the eye, refining the planned treatment on the digital model and once perfected, only then applied to your eye. A new era in laser vision correction.

The only way is forward. We’re going through a rebranding process with the infinitely talented Matthew Ray Scott and Amanda Cardwell Carones MPH and can’t wait to share their concept for the Wellington Eye Clinic. Everyone in our team grasped and loved it immediately. New photos always help and we were spotted from a distance going through the process. Stay tuned for a reveal in the coming days.
