Post 6/6 Summary 🎥 Wrapping Up: Blog Series on Drone Applications in Dublin City Council (DCC) In Q2 2024, DCC launched its first Drone and Urban Air Mobility Strategy 2024–2029. An ambitious and progressive project seeks to revolutionise the way the city employs drone technology to improve public services. You can read and download it at: https://bit.ly/4bOGEGg Over the past few weeks, following this strategy launch, we’ve explored how drones are transforming public services across Dublin City Council. Each post focused on a specific use case, highlighting how technology is enhancing safety, efficiency, and innovation. Here is the summary video: Short video: https://shorturl.at/oUBgR (2:14 min) Longer video: https://shorturl.at/sS4mK (5:30 min) Here's the full recap: 1️⃣ Survey & Mapping (https://rb.gy/oig1zp) Since 2017, DCC’s Survey and Mapping Division has used drones to support projects, inspections, and asset management and produce videos, 3D models and orthophotomaps. Drones enhance safety by removing the need for staff to access hazardous areas and ensure fast, efficient responses across departments. 2️⃣ Flood Defence Projects Office (https://bit.ly/3V9Mqg7) DCC’s Flood Defence team uses drones to inspect critical infrastructure ( like Fitzwilliam Quay or 12th-century Islandbridge Weir) efficiently and safely. Drones are vital for safeguarding both historic sites and flood-prone areas, ensuring community safety while reducing costs. 3️⃣ Dangerous Buildings Section (https://shorturl.at/zZlws) Inspectors are using drones to safely assess structural damage, eliminating the need for scaffolding or cherry pickers. This approach minimizes risk, reduces costs, and speeds up response times in hazardous situations. 4️⃣ Active Travel and Urban Mobility (https://bit.ly/40BiblD) Drones are assisting with large scale Clontarf to City Centre Project (C2CC) project oversight by capturing progress updates and visuals to inform decision-making. This technology is a key enabler for modern urban mobility projects. 5️⃣ Dublin Fire Brigade(https://shorturl.at/Dg6L0) Dublin Fire Brigade uses drones for real-time aerial insights, 3D mapping of high-risk sites, and pre-incident planning, enhancing safety, efficiency, and emergency preparedness. 📢 Why It Matters These examples demonstrate how DCC is embracing innovation to improve service delivery, reduce costs, and ensure safety. From planning to emergency response, drones are reshaping how we tackle urban challenges. Thank you for following this series—I hope it inspired new ways to think about technology and public services! #Drones #SmartCities #Innovation #Dublin Jamie Cudden Veronica Mariti Sesoko Thomas Curran Dermot Collins Dennis Keeley Michael O Donnell Eoin Ging Simona Maria Fador Sinéad Pidgeon Gabriela Huller Oosi Ntereke Philip Butterworth-Hayes Julie Garland Gavin Thornberry Enda Walsh Tim McCarthy Stephanie Keogh Produced by: Bad Coyote 🎥

Where are the air pollution hotspots in Dublin city? Researchers using Google Street View air quality data can pinpoint the parts of the city with the biggest concentrations of pollutants. Piece co-authored by Dr David O'Connor, Associate Professor in the School of Chemical Sciences DCU Faculty of Science and Health, for RTE Brainstorm. 'Dublin’s air quality has long been shaped by its dependence on fossil fuels. Coal and turf burned for heating once blanketed the city in a dense smog during colder months, creating health crises that became all too common by the mid-20th century. Regulations introduced in the 1990s, including the ban on smoky coal, marked a turning point and gradually helped to clear the air.' 'While solid fuel burning is still a problem, additional challenges have arisen. Today, nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) from vehicle exhausts are the main culprits, posing significant health risks in densely populated and traffic-heavy areas. Poor air quality contributes to approximately 1,300 premature deaths in Ireland every year.' Empowering Young Minds to Shape the Future of Technology! 🚀💡🤖 Last week, in collaboration with the DCU Access Office, we hosted two engaging workshops for students from 15 DEIS schools. Over two days, the students explored cutting-edge technologies and imagined their future applications. 🔹 Workshop 1: Wearable Technologies and Smart Garments 🎨🧥 Led by Dr. Shirley Coyle and Sanjaya Dinuwan Gunawardhana, the students learnt about smart textiles and designed futuristic smart garments they envisioned for 2030. 🔹 Workshop 2: Digital Twins and Smart DCU 🖥️🌟 Facilitated by Dr. Ali Intizar, Kieran Mahon, and Alshema (الشيماء) Mousa, the students experienced DCU’s campus in a whole new way - through a VR headset and digital twin technology. It was fantastic to see the students’ creativity and curiosity come to life during these sessions! A big thank you to everyone who made these workshops a success including Maz Sweeney and Aidan O'Driscoll from the Dublin City University Access Office. 💡✨ #STEMeducation #SmartTechnologies #Outreach #FutureInnovation #Insight
