Earlier this month Smart Balbriggan held a hackathon. A hackathon is a creative way to bring together citizens, academia, and industry specialists to brainstorm solutions to different problems a community faces. In Balbriggan the identified issues were categorised into: 📍Resources monitoring 📍Business engagement 📍Youth engagement 📍Transport 📍Community Over the course of 1-day participants competed in teams and through discussions and workshopping problems each team suggested solutions to address them. Inspiring to listen to Janette Sadik-Khan speak yesterday in the House of Lord's Chamber at Bank of Ireland College Green. Janette Sadik-Khan transformed New York City during her time as transportation commissioner, redefining the role and shifting the focus from traffic management to prioritising pedestrians, cyclists, public transit, and high-quality urban spaces. Her work helped turn NYC from a car-clogged metropolis into a more sustainable and people-friendly city. It was also a pleasure to join Janette & the Dublin City Council Active Travel team on a cycle tour of Dublin to check out the incredible new Clontarf to City Centre cycle route, which will be formally launched next week. Credit to Victor Coe & his team for developing a world class active travel route and setting the standard for new active travel projects in Ireland. Some excellent community engagement work took place recently in Balbriggan during science week. Demystifying the internet of things (IoT) was the the theme for this year with some interesting discussions and the unveiling of a commissioned series "How it's Made" created by local artist by local artist.
We were delighted to be joined by Deputy Mayor, Councillor John-Kingsley Onwumereh, as part of Science Week activities last week at the Our Balbriggan Hub. A panel discussion took place with Dr. John Gallagher (Trinity College Dublin), Dominic Byrne (Head of Information Technology, Fingal County Council), moderated by Eamonn Donlyn, (Co-ordinator of Smart Balbriggan). Local artist Matthew Kelly showcased illustrations on the evolution and future of the Internet of Things and Demystifying IOT. An art exhibit from artists Murielle Celis & Gordon Farrell also featured at the Our Balbriggan Hub window throughout the week. The initiative was a partnership between Fingal County Council, Smart Balbriggan and the CONNECT Centre, SCÉAL Arts Collective with curator Valeria Ceregini to tell the ‘Internet of Things’ story in a creative and unique fashion.
