💡 Let’s kick the week off with some striking visuals and serious neurotoxin action: α-Bungarotoxin-ATTO Fluor-590, a fluorescent conjugated natural toxin that knows its way around nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). Here you can see α-Bungarotoxin-ATTO Fluor-590 (B-100-AR) in live, differentiated PC-12 cells after 9 days of neurite outgrowth induction with our mouse NGF 2.5S (N-240). A) The green fluorescence is CellMask™ Actin and shows the cell membranes neatly. B) In red you can see precisely where the nAChRs are. This is after a 30-minute incubation with 1 µM α-Bungarotoxin-ATTO Fluor-590. C) The merged live cell image. Our α-Bungarotoxin is a modified natural protein isolated from the venom of the banded krait snake (Bungarus multicinctus). It’s best known for blocking postsynaptic neuromuscular transmission by competitively inhibiting nAChRs with impressive selectivity (IC50 = 1.6 nM for α7 and IC50 value of >3 μM for α3/β4 receptors). With the added visualization power of the ATTO Fluor-590 label, conjugated toxins like this give you high-resolution live-cell imaging and receptor function study options. It's pretty cool stuff! It’s another beautiful Monday so it’s time for some stellar microscopy content: ATX-II-ATTO Fluor-647N, a fluorescent conjugated toxin straight from a sea anemone, in live cells. Here’s a snapshot of ATX-II-ATTO Fluor-647N (STA-700-FRN) in neonatal mouse cardiomyocytes. A) Green fluorescence marks cellular membranes (thanks, CellMask™ Actin) B) In red you can see ATX-II-ATTO Fluor-647N beautifully highlighting the Na+ channels C) The merged live image Why’s this exciting? 🤩 Our ATX-II is a synthetic toxin, originally from the venom of Anemonia sulcata, and it’s a potent neurotoxin that modulates voltage-gated Na+ channels. And because it prolongs action potentials, it’s a powerful tool in electrophysiology. Conjugate it to an ATTO Fluor dye and you’ve got a brilliant way to visualize sodium channels with style – in live cells!
