LAVA addresses the key challenges of renewable energy: efficiency, intermittency, and financial viability. Its proprietary liquid-based thermodynamic cycle operates at near-perfect efficiency (70-80% of Carnot), significantly improving both the efficiency and economics of heat-to-electricity and electricity-to-heat conversion. The company’s roadmap features an isothermal heat engine that converts heat into zero-emission electricity, a high-efficiency isothermal heat pump offering a clean alternative to emission-heavy industrial boilers, and the Carnot Battery for long-duration storage, capable of turning any solar or wind installation into reliable baseload power. With $500,000 from the Industrial Transformation Challenge, LAVA (formerly Luminescent) is partnering with Kanin Energy and Birchcliff Energy Ltd. to develop a heat engine that converts low- and medium-grade waste heat into emissions-free electricity. This project aims to transform low grade heat into onsite, carbon-free electricity that enhances resilience and lowers demand from the grid. Our investment will accelerate the design and delivery of a commercial pilot, preparing LAVA for commercial deployment.
