We’re thrilled to welcome Dr. Iris Dror to MIGAL as the head of our new research group focused on gene expression control! After spending nearly a decade at UCLA as part of Professor Katrin Plath’s lab, Dr. Dror has returned to Israel with an impressive background in epigenetics, studying the mechanisms that control cell differentiation and gene expression. Her groundbreaking work includes uncovering how X-chromosome gene expression is regulated and silenced, offering insights into the complex processes that influence cell fate. 🧬 Dr. Dror’s journey began with a BSc. in Biology, where she discovered her passion using computational methods to unravel biological questions. She earned her PhD under the mentorship of Prof. Yael Mandel Guttfreund at the Technion and later refined her expertise in Los Angeles, conducting research at both USC and UCLA. Now, Dr. Dror has returned to her roots – to Israel and to the north – bringing her wealth of knowledge and innovative ideas to MIGAL. Her new lab will dive into how transcription factors, non-coding RNAs like XIST, and chromatin states regulate gene expression in human and mouse cells. The goal? To unlock the genetic mechanisms behind development and cellular reprogramming. This pioneering work will involve large-scale genomic techniques and promises to expand our understanding of gene regulation. Iris shared that her decision to return home was solidified by recent events, recognizing her deep connection to family and community here in Israel. She’s excited to build her team at MIGAL and is currently looking for passionate students or postdocs to join her. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Iris Dror to MIGAL – we’re eager to see all that her expertise and creativity will bring to the global research community!

Did you know bananas are under threat? 🍌 One of the world’s most popular fruits faces a serious challenge from Panama disease, a devastating fungal infection that has been wiping out banana crops around the globe. 🌍 Bananas are a vital crop that sustains the livelihoods of millions of people. For countless communities, bananas are a daily staple, a source of essential nutrients, and a primary income source. As global population grows along with food insecurity, protecting these crops becomes more critical than ever. Unfortunately, there’s no cure for Panama disease. Once the fungus infects the soil, it can persist for decades, making affected land unusable for banana cultivation. But we’re not giving up! At MIGAL, Dr Navot Galpaz and Amir Raz, researchers from the Northern R&D, are using advanced genome-editing techniques to develop banana strains that can stand up to Panama disease, making banana farming more resilient. Such work is a testament to the power of modern science in addressing global challenges like food insecurity. It also has strong relevance for Israel, where bananas are a key crop in northern regions, supporting local agriculture and rural economies. 🌱 Haya Rak Yahalom

Wrapping up an inspiring week in Brussels at #MissionSoilWeek, focused on the Mission Soil Clusters. As Sonia Pietosi rightly pointed out, the value of networking stood out as a key highlight. It’s truly exciting to be part of the #MissionSoil family, learning from one another, and working collaboratively toward common goals for soil health. At MIGAL Galilee Research Institute , we are proud to be leading the first Living Lab of the #MissionSoil initiative in Israel, a significant step in advancing soil health and sustainability. The Israeli Living Lab, presented by Eric Benmeir Kozakow, consists of 20 demo sites across Israel, enabling and demonstrating the transition to carbon farming practices. This project is central to the #LILAS4SOILS and #Soill initiatives, driving innovation in sustainable agriculture in Israel. We are collaborating with key stakeholders like GRANOT Central Cooperative Ltd., a leading agricultural corporation, and the Upper Galilee Regional Council, a key environmental policymaker, to ensure this transition is effective and impactful. A big thank you to all the participants for their valuable contributions throughout the event. Now, as #LILAS4SOILS partners, it's time to roll up our sleeves and get to work! Together, we’re shaping a sustainable future for soil health. #SustainableAgriculture #ClimateAction #Mediterranean #Europe #soilhealth #climatechange #foodsecurity #innovation #research #farming #green #sustainabledevelopment #LivingLabs #EITFood #CarbonChange #RegionOfCentralGreece #UpperGalileeRegionalCouncil MIGAL Galilee Research Institute EIT Food GRANOT Central Cooperative Ltd. Mango lovers, have you ever wondered what makes this tropical delight so special – or how scientists are working to make it even better? 🍈 Mango isn’t just a delicious treat; it’s a superfruit packed with vitamins, antioxidants, and flavor that’s winning over fans worldwide. As demand grows, so does the need to keep mango farming sustainable, resilient, and productive – and that’s exactly what we’re focused on at MIGAL. 💪 Our mango research combines two complementary directions: field experiments and lab research. The field trials take place at Zemach Feed Mill צמח תערובות research farms in the Jordan Valley and Western Galilee, where our Northern R&D Unit's scientists are testing new rootstocks, cultivars, and ways to create the perfect microclimate, for example by using nets and sprayers. Meanwhile, in MIGAL’s labs, our scientists are doing advanced molecular research to take mango breeding to the next level. In collaboration with Gene-G, Applied Genetics, Dr Navot Galpaz leads efforts to develop, genetically characterize different mango varieties and identify the sections of their DNAs, responsible for the most important phenotypic traits. The work is conducted with support from National Mango Board- U.S. Department of Agriculture- Research and Promotions, a USDA arm focused solely on mango promotion and research to increase its consumption. Through these innovative approaches and collaboration with global and local stakeholders, we’re working toward a future of resilient, high-yield mango farming that’s good for farmers, great for the planet, and delicious for everyone. Here’s to more mangoes and a greener future! 🌱🥭

A key project by MIGAL's Medicinal Mushrooms laboratory is focused on studying active compounds from the Lion's Mane mushroom using astrocyte and neuron-like cell cultures. It has faced significant challenges during the last year due to restricted access to our facilities, located in close proximity to the Northern border of Israel. Fortunately, thanks to the establishment of a new cell culture facility at Tel-Hai College campus in Katzrin, our team can use its sophisticated equipment to continue advancing the research. We aim to develop modern medical and nutritional solutions to capitalize on the species' neuroprotective effects, long known in Chinese traditional medicine. The lab managed by Dr Idan Pereman also conducts research on local truffle species, regularly discovering and classifying new ones. Fun fact: several of those officially received their name in Hebrew last December, after a special mushroom-naming session conducted for the first time since 1949 by The Academy of the Hebrew Language. The process was led by a special committee within the Academy, consisting of linguists, mycologists and experienced foragers, and successfully assigned new names to around 250 mushroom species.
