PVC waste is notoriously tough to recycle - but Israeli startup Plastic Back is turning it into a game-changing opportunity. Over 400 million tons of plastic scrap are produced each year, yet less than 6% is recycled. The rest clogs landfills, pollutes the environment, and costs the global economy $120 billion annually. PVC, among the toughest plastic to recycle, has long been one of the most pressing hurdles - until now. With a BIRD Energy grant, Plastic Back (Israel) and Freepoint Eco-Systems (Stamford, CT) are joining forces to tackle this issue. Combining Plastic Back’s innovative low-temperature chemical recycling technology and Freepoint’s expertise in scaling sustainable solutions, they’re turning PVC waste into valuable oils and brine solutions that can be reintegrated into petrochemical processes. This partnership closes the loop on hard-to-recycle PVC waste, cuts landfill overflow, and drives a circular economy - a key to long-term environmental and economic sustainability. “We see the PVC chemical recycling segment as a major opportunity,” says Plastic Back CEO Tal Cohen. “The support from the BIRD Foundation strengthens our ability to commercialize our solution in the U.S. and close the loop on difficult-to-treat PVC waste streams.” 🔗 Read more here: https://lnkd.in/d5f3zU8v 💡 Have a clean energy innovation? Plastic Back
Chemical Manufacturing
Conversion of plastic waste to valuable raw materials.
עלינו
Plastic Back is a clean tech plastic recycling start-up that converts plastic waste to crude oil, waxes and other valuable chemicals. Our product, a conversion unit based on chemical oxidation, allows treatment and landfill sites to reduce the amount of waste added to landfills while providing 'waste producers' such as factories, agriculture operations, and hospitals an alternative to expensive waste removal fees.

Had a great time catching up with Sara Miller and NoCamels - Israeli Tech & Innovation News to discuss Plastic Back and our PVC value offering. ♻ ♻ ♻ https://lnkd.in/dZpBTzeB
An Israeli startup has found a way to turn plastic waste into black gold – by transforming it back into the crude oil that it originally came from. Plastic Back uses a proprietary method that takes discarded polyvinyl chloride, better known as PVC, and breaks it down into its components of crude oil and chlorine, both of which are then reused. “Plastic is made from oil, so we are converting it back to what it was made from,” Plastic Back co-founder and CEO Tal Cohen tells NoCamels. “Because we’re able to take both the carbon and the chlorine content, Plastic Back is the first chemical company that is able to do the complete cycle for PVC,” he says. “We are targeting to have 100,000 tons of PVC treated per annum by 2028,” he says. “So that means we have to really get working!” #plasticwaste #crudeoil #pvc #israelitech #polyvinylchloride #chlorine #reuse #israelinnovation #carbon #blackgold #petrochemicalapplications #polymer #syntheticplasticpolymer https://lnkd.in/dQhezNPF

Israeli startup Plastic Back has teamed up with Thai petrochemicals company SCGC - SCG Chemicals on a project to recycle polyvinyl chloride (PVC) waste into naphtha fuel for industrial use in Thailand. The partnership was jointly announced by the National Innovation Agency (NIA) in Thailand and the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA) – both branches of their respective governments dedicated to advancing the local tech sector. “I strongly believe that this innovation will be the beginning of more [bilateral] collaboration in the future,” said Israeli Ambassador to Thailand Orna Sagiv. Plastic Back diverts discarded plastic from landfills and other locations and converts it back to its original form of crude oil. Its proprietary process treats materials that would otherwise not be recyclable. #pvc #recycle #recyclepvc #israelinnovation #israelitech #globalpartnerships #crudeoil #sustainability #thailand https://lnkd.in/dUc8W67z

Our lead chemist Noam Steinman discusses the opportunity in PVC recycling and how Plastic Back has found its market fit in offering a full chemical solution for non-recycled PVC, allowing the upcycling of both the Carbon and Chlorine fractions of the PVC polymer. Thanks VinylPlus® for having us, and see you next year!
