"I made one of the biggest career decisions of my life in the beginning of the year - I decided to start my new career as a physician scientist by stepping into an industry role at Teva." Meet Marina Mihaljevic, MD, PhD, Director of Translational Medicine for Innovative Medicines in Neuroscience. "Ever since I started my career as a physician, I’ve had a passion for research that leads to discovering new treatments. After completing my medical degree at Belgrade University, I started PhD studies in molecular medicine following psychiatry residency. I then became a physician scientist at University Clinical Center of Serbia. Coming from a small country, I sought to expand my expertise in the US. Through a Fulbright Scholarship at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, I immersed myself in translational research in neuroscience. It was exhilarating, yet I felt a strong need to work on developing therapies that could directly impact patients' lives. That’s when I hit a crossroads. I had two paths ahead of me: return to Serbia and continue practicing as a psychiatrist or follow my heart and dive deeper into drug development. I chose the latter, knowing it was my true passion. Today, I’m part of an amazing team developing innovative treatments in neuroscience. The environment is very supportive, the people around me are brilliant, and I know I’m in the right place. If there’s one piece of advice I’d give to anyone considering a leap into a new career in the pharma industry, it’s this: don’t be afraid to follow your passion. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the digestive system and impacts millions of people all over the world. Incidences of IBD are on the rise and its prevalence is increasing in western countries. There is currently no cure for IBD. And while several treatment options are available, they may not all work for every patient, or may stop working over time. In a partnership with Sanofi, Teva is developing a new therapy to potentially address unmet needs for the treatment of IBD. Sometimes, the road less traveled takes you to the most amazing places ✨ That's exactly what happened to Elena Lapkina Gendler. "I took an unconventional path to come to Teva. I have a BA in Nursing and worked for almost six years in the general children's unit at the Schneider Children's Medical Center in Israel. But I was looking for a new challenge; I didn’t want to spend my entire career at the hospital. So I studied for my M.Sc-Ph.D. and afterwards started working at Teva as a Scientist." Today, Elena is the Pharmacology Project Lead in our research labs in Netanya. She leads the scientific strategy for drug development, ensuring a strong foundation for clinical trials and patient benefit. "Every day brings new challenges and opportunities," Elena shares. "I love the scientific aspect of my work. It requires constantly thinking outside the box. My medical background as a nurse really helps me design research, and it makes it easier to connect with the physicians we work with." 💡 Elena's advice for those considering changing their careers: "We spend so much time at work.
