During four years (2023-2027), LUCIA will work to contribute to the EU mission ‘Beating Cancer’ along with other projects and researchers across Europe. We will focus on the risks associated with developing Lung Cancer and its subtypes and the methods best suited for prompt diagnoses.

On 4 and 5 February 2025, the Healthy Lungs for Life campaign brought an interactive exhibition and free lung check at the European Parliament! The campaign is organised by Lungs Europe, a partnership of the European Respiratory Society and the European Lung Foundation. Pascal Garel & Marie Nabbe (HOPE - European Hospital and Healthcare Federation) from the LUCIA EU Project attended the event and did the #lung check. The spirometry test is a quick way to check lung function by measuring how much air a person can blow out of their lungs. It is an essential part of #prevention and #screening for #lungcancer and other #respiratorydiseases. As mentioned by the ELF, several MEPs who participated in the event committed to joining the MEP Lung Health Group, an informal platform for policymakers, health professionals and patients to identify the potential EU policy measures aimed at improving lung health. #cancer #lungcancer #lungdisease #respiratorydisease #lunghealth #policy #earlyprevention #earlytreatment

In the LUCIA EU Project, the Genome Data Lab is modelling the risk of lung cancer and risk of mutational signatures from inherited genetic variation, so it can be predicted for any person. Novel AI methods are tested to boost prediction. In the LUCIA project, the Genome Data Lab is using gene editing in lung cancer cell models to understand carcinogenic effects of various genes affected by inherited variants and by copy number alterations, causing lung cancer. #lungcancer #cancer #genome #gene #geneediting #research #AI #predictions #horizoneurope

Throwback from our time in Sevilla, Spain! During the LUCIA EU Project Consortium meeting last November, some partners visited the Los Carteros Primary Care Center in San José de la Rinconada, Seville. This center is one of the pivotal sites participating in the recruitment phase of the LUCIA prospective study in Andalucía. The study, which aims to recruit 4,000 patients across all participating clinical sites in Spain, Belgium and Latvia, is focused on enhancing our understanding of the risk factors contributing to the development of lung cancer by collecting comprehensive data. During the visit, Luis Gabriel Luque, accompanied by his team from the North Seville-Aljarafe Clinical Research Unit, worked closely with the Los Carteros staff to showcase the center’s facilities. The consortium had the opportunity to observe the recruitment workflow in real time, gaining firsthand insights into how participants are seamlessly onboarded into the study. A key highlight of the visit was the live demonstration of the recruitment process involving two volunteers. This provided an in-depth view of the study protocol in action, including the administration of tests, data collection procedures, and the adherence to research protocols. The demonstration highlighted the commitment of SAS (Servicio Andaluz de Salud) and FISEVI (Fundación Andaluza para la Gestión de la Investigación en Salud de Sevilla) to maintaining the highest standards in research by fostering close collaboration between clinical research teams and primary care professionals. The consortium expressed its gratitude for the opportunity to witness the recruitment process firsthand and commended the professionalism, enthusiasm, and dedication of the Los Carteros staff and the North Seville-Aljarafe Clinical Research Unit team. This visit marked an important milestone in the LUCIA project as the prospective study progresses, underscoring the essential role of collaboration and innovation in advancing lung cancer research. #visit #primarycarecenter #primarycare #recruitment #patientrecruitment #research #cancer #lungcancer #clinical #clinicalsite #clinicalresearch #datacollection #workflow #collaboration #innovation

In healthcare, reliability is essential to trust and effectiveness. Technical accuracy must go hand in hand with ethical requirements to create systems that both patients and professionals can trust. Building reliable AI involves a clear focus on three essential principles: transparency, robustness, and fairness. 🔍Transparency AI systems must be clear in how they work and why they make specific recommendations. This involves providing thorough documentation of the training processes and decision-making criteria. Equally important is ensuring that the results are presented in a way that clinicians can easily interpret and validate, allowing them to make informed decisions with confidence. 🔬 Robustness For AI to be reliable, it must consistently perform well even in complex and variable clinical scenarios. This is achieved by developing and testing the system on datasets that reflect real-world medical diversity and ensuring continuous validation to maintain stable performance over time. 🤝 Fairness AI in healthcare must actively contribute to reducing inequalities rather than reinforcing them. Addressing biases in data and algorithms is critical, alongside designing solutions that cater to the diverse needs of all patient groups, regardless of their background or circumstances. In the LUCIA EU Project project, we integrate these principles to ensure that AI is developed responsibly and effectively improves healthcare outcomes. DEXAI - Artificial Ethics collaborates closely with LUCIA's partners to ensure these principles are consistently upheld throughout the development process. #ai #healthcare #ehealth #cancer #lungcancer #research #ethics #trust #effectiveness #transparency #robustness #fairness

We have begun testing the AI Impact Assessment tool via the ImpactRadar platform, developed by Yaghma. Xabier Calle Sánchez from Vicomtech assisted in testing the initial questions regarding bias during the design phase of the risk prediction algorithm for lung cancer at LUCIA EU Project. One of the key insights Xabier shared was how valuable it was to review a comprehensive list of potential sub-populations that might face health inequalities, beyond traditional dimensions like gender, age, race, and socio-cultural factors. The current version of our AI Impact Assessment tool also highlights additional dimensions to consider, including: - Economical differences - Geographical disparities (e.g., rural areas) - Language barriers - Historical differences in access to diagnosis and treatment - Sub-populations with poor data representation (e.g., immigrants) - Variations in disease prevalence and severity across different groups - Disabilities - Differences in awareness of one’s own mental or physical health - People with rare diseases - Multi-morbidities - Intersectional identities linked to greater inequalities 📈 Testing the tool has been highly valuable for our development process, uncovering unexpected benefits and insights that will inform our future direction. #AI #insights #lungcancer #impact #assesment #tool #health #ImpactRadar #platform
