19 Years of Light: Akhand Jyoti Shines Brighter Than Ever Today, on our 19th Foundation Day, Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital reflects on a remarkable journey. From a humble 10-bed facility, we've grown into the largest super speciality eye hospital network in Eastern India, with a profound impact on the region. This wouldn't have been possible without the unwavering support of our donors, patrons, and well-wishers. Your generosity has been the fuel that propelled us forward, allowing us to perform over 1 lakh life-changing eye surgeries annually and empowering rural underprivileged girls through education and empowerment. Our deepest gratitude extends to our exceptional team: the board, advisory board members, doctors, clinical staff, and all our dedicated support staff. Together, we've established a network of 5 surgical hospitals and 37 vision centres and even pioneered India's first rural Centre of Excellence eye care facility. Today, Akhand Jyoti stands as the most trusted eye care provider in the region. We hold our values of world-class quality, affordability, and accessibility close to our heart, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to see the world clearly. As we celebrate our #19thFoundationDay, we reaffirm our commitment to continuous learning and growth. May this journey of restoring sight and empowering lives continue for many years to come. Akhand Jyoti works towards eliminating curable blindness from low-income geographies and empowers underprivileged girls.
About us
Founded in 2005, Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital operates under the Yugrishi Shriram Sharma Acharya Charitable Trust, a registered non-profit dedicated to addressing economic and gender inequalities in low-income regions, especially in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Our mission is to create a world without blindness and a future where women thrive by restoring sight to those needlessly blind and empowering rural girls through education, skill development, and entrepreneurship. Starting as a humble 10-bed hospital within a temple complex, Akhand Jyoti has grown into the largest eye hospital in Eastern India. Our innovative and holistic approach is built on three key pillars: Sight Restoration, Education and Empowerment of Rural Girls, and Serving Low-Income Geographies. These pillars address the pressing challenges of poverty, blindness, and gender inequality faced by rural populations. With the philosophy of ‘Working Where it Really Matters,’ we operate a vast network of over 40 eye care centres, 5 surgical eye hospitals, and the world’s first Centre of Excellence in eye care in rural India. Currently, we screen over 10,00,000 patients and perform over 93,000 surgeries annually of which 80% is completely free to the underprivileged patients. By 2030, we aim to quadruple our capacity, restoring sight to 2 million people, screening 12 million, and educating and training 1,500 girls.

Football is more than just a sport for the rural girls enrolled in the 'Football to Eyeball' Girls' Education Program. It’s a tool of #transformation, drawing young girls out of their homes, breaking down deep-rooted gender barriers, and inspiring confidence that lasts far beyond the field. Through the power of football, these girls are not just learning how to dribble or score goals—they’re discovering their voices and potential, becoming #catalystsofchange in their communities. While some girls go on to play professionally, proudly representing Bihar at state and national tournaments. Others use the sport as a stepping stone to build the confidence needed to pursue careers in fields like #optometry, where they are being trained to fight #curableblindness in rural India. The journey of these young athletes goes beyond sport; it’s about empowerment, education, and opportunity. By supporting these girls, you’re investing in a future where they not only excel on the field but also become leaders in their communities, breaking the cycle of poverty and discrimination. Football is the game, but empowerment is the goal. In Dujara village, Roshni's life plunged into darkness after a severe injury that threw her into a deep tunnel of blindness. Her mother worked tirelessly, yet treatment was beyond reach. Hope appeared when Akhand Jyoti, through the 'Bal Drishti' Children Screening initiative, offered Roshni free sight-restoration surgery. After her successful operation, Roshni’s joy was boundless as she returned to school, rejoining her classmates and catching up on missed lessons. Her story shines as a potent reminder that compassion and community support can transform lives and bring lost dreams back into focus. With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Devika Waney Mokhtarzadeh, our beloved friend and long-standing partner from The Savitri Waney Charitable Trust. For more than a decade, Devika led the Trust, based in the UK, as a steadfast partner of Akhand Jyoti Eye Hospital. Through thick and thin, and despite our imperfections, her unwavering commitment and belief in our mission have laid a strong foundation for growth. Devika and the Waney family's support has helped build a care model that delivers quality healthcare at scale in low-resource settings, ensuring that rural communities, especially those at the last mile, receive proper care. The Trust has been instrumental in supporting eye surgeries and played a vital role in building an eye hospital in Purnea. To this day, they continue to support Akhand Jyoti's blindness elimination programme, providing free cataract surgeries to the marginalised. Devika was more than a partner to us — she was family. Her legacy of compassion and generosity will continue to inspire us all. As we honour her memory, we are reminded of the profound impact she made on the lives of so many. #LegacyOfCompassion #Partnership #Gratitude #AkhandJyoti
