Rongoli Rabha from Kamrup district, Assam, started working as an ASHA (frontline health worker) in 2016. She took the Mobile Academy course in 2022 to further improve her work in serving women and children in her community. Rongoli found the course very helpful for understanding maternal and child health, allowing her to give better advice to pregnant women and mothers. She highlighted how it prepared her to counsel mothers about their health during pregnancy. She regularly informs pregnant women about Kilkari calls, encouraging them to listen to them as they provide valuable information for both the baby and the mother. Rongoli also mentioned that Dr. Anita's voice in the Mobile Academy course is very appealing, making learning enjoyable and she also liked the engaging question-and-answer format. *representational image #ASHAWorker #MaternalHealth #ChildHealth #WomenEmpowerment #CommunityHealth #HealthEducation #Kilkari #MobileAcademy #pregnantwomen #mothers #children #Assam

Bhagwati Baghel, a 33-year-old from Bastar district in Chhattisgarh, has been serving as an ASHA (frontline health worker) since 2004. Her unwavering dedication to improving the lives of women and children in her community led her to pursue the Mobile Academy course, recognising its potential to further enhance her work. According to Bhagwati, "The course has deepened my understanding of antenatal and postnatal care, equipping me to provide better guidance to women. I've gained insights into child growth and development, the importance of a nutritious diet, breastfeeding, and hygiene. It has made me more comfortable discussing family planning with women." Despite facing challenges such as poor network connectivity in her village, Bhagwati's determination drove her to complete the Mobile Academy course. Her persistence made her travel to areas with better connectivity to ensure successful completion of the course. She proudly states, "I now approach my work as an ASHA with enhanced confidence. It's gratifying that women trust me and follow my advice during pregnancy and infancy. My community respects me for the work I do." *this is a representational image #healthcare #capacitybuilding #frontlineworkers #publichealth #healthworkers #womenshealth #maternalhealth #childhealth #ASHAs #mobiletraining

Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) from Sambhal and the aspirational district of Shravasti (Uttar Pradesh), trained through ARMMAN’s Integrated High Risk Pregnancy Tracking and Management (IHRPTM) programme, were struggling to focus on delivering maternal health services in the midst of several other activities. They demanded to schedule a dedicated day to ensure that they can apply their learnings from the high risk pregnancy protocols training provided by ARMMAN. We carried their voices to the District officials, who promptly responded by inaugurating Antenatal Care (ANC) clinics in these districts and announced separate days when nurses can cater to the needs of pregnant women. Dr. Ajay Pratap Singh, Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Shravasti district, highlights this as a significant step in improving access to quality care for women with high-risk pregnancies. The IHRPTM programme focusses on training and supporting Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), Medical Officers (MOs) and Specialist Doctors on high-risk pregnancy tracking, management and referrals. The programme is currently implemented in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh where more than 15,000 ANMs, MOs and Specialists have been trained in high-risk pregnancy protocols. During a routine home visit by Arogya Sakhi Narmada Hirkuda, 24-year-old Mangala More from Wadoli village, Maharashtra, shared that she was pregnant and was experiencing red discharge, fatigue, and dizziness. Narmada immediately referred her to a primary health center (PHC), where she received saline and injections. Given her condition, Mangala was classified as a high-risk pregnancy. In a follow-up visit in the same month, Mangala disclosed experiencing lower abdominal pain a few weeks prior. Despite being advised to visit the hospital, financial constraints led her family to seek help from a village Dai (midwife) instead. The next month, Mangala sent an urgent message to the Arogya Sakhi in the morning, complaining of stomach pain and white discharge. Narmada visited her immediately and accompanied her to the PHC. Upon examination, the doctor identified that the baby was in distress and advised an immediate referral to Jawhar Rural Hospital, located 15 kilometers away. However, Mangala’s family could not afford transportation costs. Understanding the urgency, Narmada arranged a private jeep and assured her that the travel expenses would be covered. At Jawhar Rural Hospital, Mangala delivered a healthy baby boy weighing 3.24 kg. Both mother and baby were stable post-delivery. A few days after her delivery, Mangala developed facial swelling. Recognizing the need for immediate care, Narmada facilitated her treatment, after which Mangala recovered well. #mhealth #maternalhealth #childhealth #healthworkers

In May 2024, we began training Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) in Sambhal and aspirational district of Shravasti (Uttar Pradesh), in high risk pregnancy protocols through our Integrated High Risk Pregnancy Tracking and Management programme. The knowledge gained by the nurses enabled them to understand the significance of early detection and management of high-risk pregnancy conditions, resulting in a demand from the ANMs to organise dedicated days in the district for Antenatal Care services. We carried their voices to the District officials, who promptly responded.
