In rural India, primary education enrollment is impressively high at 100.6%. Yet, literacy rates paint a troubling picture—states like Jharkhand report rates as low as 57.6%. This gap between enrollment and learning raises a critical question: Why aren’t children learning despite being in school? Challenges? 1. Many rural schools lack qualified teachers. Even where teachers are present, they often don’t receive the training needed to make lessons engaging or tailored to diverse student needs. 2. In many rural areas, children speak local dialects at home but are taught in a state or national language they don’t fully understand. 3. Children who fall behind in early grades often never catch up. If foundational skills like reading and basic arithmetic aren’t mastered early, advanced learning becomes impossible. 4. Policies often prioritize getting children into school, but less attention is paid to what they learn once they’re there. How can we bridge this gap? 1. Policies should focus on measurable learning outcomes, not just enrollment statistics. Regular assessments can help identify gaps and address them early. 2. Focus on foundational literacy and numeracy in the first few years of schooling. Programs like Pratham’s Read India have shown how targeted interventions can make a difference. 3. Teachers need ongoing training to use child-friendly and interactive teaching methods. Investing in teachers is investing in learning. The problem isn’t access—it’s what happens inside the classroom. Teacher shortages, language barriers, poor early learning, and outdated teaching methods leave many children struggling. The solution lies in strengthening foundational skills such as training teachers, working on learning foundations and making learning engaging and relevant. It's high time we shift focus from enrollments to outcomes. #ruraleducation

Feeling incredibly grateful after an amazing day with Siddharth Agarwal in Kolkata! Yesterday we hosted a workshop where we gathered 40 passionate people to dive deep into the art of storytelling and fundraising. There’s something powerful about bringing people together around a shared purpose. We explored how stories can spark change and drive impact, especially in the nonprofit space. The workshop focused on reflection exercises, where we each revisited our unique stories. This gave us perspective and reminded us of the shared purpose driving us all forward. The energy and ideas everyone brought to the room were beyond inspiring – it reminded me just how much can happen when we come together to learn, share, and build. 😇 A big shoutout to the Teach For India team and everyone who joined us.
