🌈 Inclusion in Action at Bizyheart Studio 🌈 Read it, it's worth it! When we welcomed a new studio assistant to the Bizyheart family, we had no idea their journey with us would lead to such an important transformation. A few weeks in, they casually mentioned, "Oh, I can't really tell these colours apart." That's when we discovered they have colour blindness—a condition they hadn’t mentioned during the hiring process. Like so many others, they’d simply adapted to a world that often isn’t designed with their needs in mind. Also, can you imagine - AN ART STUDIO RUN BY A PERSON WITH COLOUR BLINDNESS? Because we can! This moment made us pause and reflect. How could we make their role—and our studio—a more inclusive and supportive space? That’s when the wheels of inclusive design started turning in my head! Here’s how we reimagined our processes: 📋 Text and Image-Based Inventory Sheets: Instead of relying on colour coding, our inventory sheets now feature images of each product alongside codes and names. This ensures clarity and ease of use, whether it’s managing stock or organising materials. 📦 Descriptive Labels: Products and materials are now labelled with names and reference codes, making them identifiable without the need to differentiate colours. Even our colour bottles have names. 🎨 Workshop Tools: We have created a personalised colour mixing chart that makes it easier for our studio assistant to provide colours to participants. (image attached) 🪜 We’re also taking it a step further by designing a self-advocacy kit for them. The goal is to help them confidently engage with participants, share their story without hesitation, and feel empowered to be honest about their condition. This experience has been eye-opening. It’s a reminder of how small, thoughtful changes can make a huge difference—not just for one person but for everyone who interacts with our studio. Colour blindness is more common than we realised, and many people don’t disclose it or even know they have it. My background in inclusive design guided me through every step of this journey. It’s taught me to dig deeper, to really understand what someone needs rather than just focusing on surface fixes. These small but meaningful changes haven’t just helped our assistant thrive—they’ve made Bizyheart Studio a more thoughtful and welcoming place for everyone who walks through our doors.
