Announcement of Indian Railways Global Ceiling Fan Competition On December 10, 2024, Indian Railways Global Ceiling Fan Competition was announced by Indian Railways and USAID's South Asia Regional Energy Partnership (SAREP) through its Low Carbon Comfort & Cooling Collective (LC4) initiative. Indian Railways operate around one million ceiling fans across 8,000+ stations, workshops, and production units, often in harsh conditions. These fans, exposed to extreme weather, operate continuously and are vulnerable to damage from birds and rodents. Most fans use conventional technology rated at 60-70 Watts, presenting a significant energy-saving opportunity. The competition seeks innovative solutions to replace the existing ceiling fans with highly durable, energy-efficient models. The applicants are encouraged to adopt environment-friendly manufacturing processes and materials with an aim to reduce embodied carbon. The competition is an opportunity for manufacturers, OEMs, and startups to lead the future of ceiling fans, innovate for low carbon cooling solutions and unlock new markets.
