  • At the 19th FICCI Higher Education Summit 2024, the FICCI KPMG Report 2024 titled “Financing Higher Education Ecosystem in India” was officially released. This report provides a detailed examination of the financial landscape in India’s higher education sector. It highlights new initiatives, suggests alternative financing models, and presents best practices to address the evolving needs of the sector. The report emphasizes the challenges of government expenditure, which has not kept pace with the growing demand for higher education, leading to resource constraints that affect both quality and accessibility. It also examines the role of private institutions in filling gaps left by public institutions but notes that this has led to increased costs for students and families. While student loans and scholarships exist, their reach remains limited, and the repayment burdens can deter prospective students. Drawing lessons from global best practices, the report highlights successful models such as the endowment system in the United States, where institutions like Harvard and Yale use endowments to support academic programs and scholarships. Additionally, Germany's dual education system, which combines academic and vocational training with industry partnerships, provides a sustainable model that aligns educational outcomes with market needs. The FICCI KPMG Knowledge Report presents potential pathways for India to overcome funding challenges and move toward a more sustainable and inclusive education financing ecosystem. It encourages the adoption of innovative financing methods to ensure accessibility, quality, and long-term financial sustainability in Indian higher education.
