We are a media platform and safe zone for queer folx from across Southeast Asia to share their stories and experiences.

About us

Gaysi Family is a media platform and safe zone for queer desis that was formed in 2008. We hold space for queer folx from across Southeast Asia to share their stories and experiences, while engaging with others from the community. We believe that it is critical to understand what it means to be queer. While people are aware that being queer means being LGBT, we must also understand that queerness is a philosophy, a politics, a sensibility. Queerness extends beyond sexual orientations, gender definitions or identities, and includes anything that’s different or alternative to the structures normalized in contemporary society. Gaysi's platform amplifies individual voices, enabling more people to meditate on and relate to what it means to be queer. For Partnerships We partner with businesses and organizations to create as well as curate media assets and event properties that are gender-expansive and queer-affirmative.

Happy women's day! We want to highlight the divas in DEI! DEI goes beyond simply hiring ‘inclusively’, tapping into the nuance of it, we’ve three stunning divas from the space who are putting in the werk actively and loudly! 🥳🙌 💅Meet the divas in question💅 Zoya (They / Them) is a seasoned expert in diversity and inclusion, and marketing. As the lead for D&I and employer branding at Godrej Properties Limited, they drive inclusive policies. Zoya believes diversity strengthens teams, fosters innovation, and drives business success. Anjali Siroya (She/Her) is a Dalit transwoman and a passionate advocate for trans rights and workplace inclusion. She spent six years at The Humsafar Trust, she worked extensively on workplace inclusion for the LGBTQIA+ community and to create inclusive and safe spaces for trans and queer individuals. Currently, as the DEI Lead at Future Generali India Insurance, she focuses on driving workplace inclusion for women, the LGBTQ+ community, and persons with disabilities (PwD), ensuring that corporate spaces become more equitable and empowering for all. Tejaswi Subramanian (They/ She) has worked in corporate environments like Mindtree, World Bank, Goldman Sachs, and CRISIL. As a queer person with a disability, they’ve faced and navigated unique issues and they connected deeply with people's workplace struggles, particularly around identity. This drove their passion for DEI&B. They’re trained as a consent, gender, and sexuality educator and a mental health first aid provider.

Being a queer staff member in a government college is nothing short of challenging. The problem starts with nobody admitting that queer people work in education, in the classrooms or at the admin desk! So I’ve had to hide my queerness at my workplace. I have been working in the administration department and the main issue I face here is that the other staff members, like any other government organization, have older folks which means there is a big generational gap and their thinking hasn’t changed. While this college has out and about queer students and a dedicated queer club, things are different for my department. The staff has a judgemental attitude and keeps passing rude remarks towards these students. I remember a couple of years back, I was helping a student who had issues in processing their academic documents. They came to collect their degree in a sari since they had transitioned. And so many folks from our department made fun of that student. It was so hurtful to witness this as an older queer person. I try to explain how queerness is natural but beyond a certain point I can’t because it could jeopardize my career. I can’t support these students outright but I try to ease whatever admin work that I can for these students because these processes are quite slow. So a lot more students prefer to approach me since I’m very student focused! I do admire the current generation of students who are so inclusive when it comes to queerness. They help each other and stand in solidarity and each year this number keeps on increasing. But within the departments, when it comes to gender, only cis women are considered in the conversation and no other gender. Now, I might not have allies, but queer colleagues exist here. They know I am queer, I know they are queer but we do not expressively tell each other that. And nobody is willing to come out because there are no policies that acknowledge queer folks in our department. And the change has to happen simply by recognizing that queer people exist in non teaching staff! Welcoming student’s queries not the nosy faculty remarks, Shaswata Mukherjee, 33 Male, Gay Junior Administrative Assistant , Education A project by Godrej Properties Limited and Gaysi Family Share your story here > https://lnkd.in/dh2sHED2 #QueeringWorkspaces #GodrejPropertiesLimited #GaysiFamily #WorkplaceDiversity #WorkplaceInclusion #LGBTQIA #Queer

I’ve been a part of the Godrej Family for 2 years to be exact and never have I ever, in my entire professional life, gotten to work in a safe workspace like this one! Now, being trans comes with heaps of challenges right from education to employment, housing and even healthcare. So when I decided to come out initially, I knew I was signing up for a long and arduous path. But if it helped easing my internal conflict with myself, I was ready to put on a resilient face and charge forth! The company's zero-tolerance policy against harassment of any kind of prejudice has ensured that everyone comes to work and feels safe. There’s a shared sense of trust and security that allows us to grow not just professionally but as a person too. I don’t even have to worry about being mistreated out of bias, and that alone eases me a lot!! Navigating a world that doesn’t accept you and rejects trans identities has surely led to barriers, I’ve had to continuously fight for my right to live authentically with dignity. But I still remember the day when Zoya took my interview and selected me for an internship with Godrej Properties Limited as a receptionist in Mumbai. I was relocated to Ahmedabad for 2 months. I was then moved to the North Zone as a receptionist and then promoted to Admin executive, after 1 year I was promoted to the title of CC Executive! I must say that the transition to the north zone was super smooth, not just because of the company’s relocation support but also because of the warmth I was welcomed with. I saw how being treated with the same respect and professionalism as everyone else feels like. Almost like my identity was acknowledged but it wasn’t ever the focal point. I’ve learnt, through each of these experiences, that self-advocacy and being here for your community is important and invaluable. By sharing my journey, I hope to inspire others to embrace their authentic selves and to foster a more inclusive and compassionate society. • What happens when you give "bad" artists the space to take up room—without the fear of rejection? Over two days, Gaysi Family brought together 80+ bad artists, a thought-provoking art exhibit—Museum of Rejects, and 8 bad art activities and wholesome bazaar at Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, New Delhi, drawing in 2400+ visitors. Through the lens of Deleted Drafts, the festival asked: What art never sees the light of day? Gatekeeping, self-censorship, and the pressure of a “perfect” finish often keep artists from putting their work out into the world. But here, every draft, every stroke, every unpolished idea had a home. A celebration, a statement, a step toward making art—and the discourse around it—more accessible. 📽️ Watch the magic unfold. 🌈 A big heart and thank you to our partners Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, MasterChow, Moxie Beauty, ZS, Tinder, Jimmy's Cocktails and Swift Co-operation.

Back in 2019 when I was interning as an interior designer and my then boss got to know from someone that I am gay. Soon after, I was laid off. Now I don’t know if it was due to… you know … me being gay or some kind of office politics *sigh*. I didn’t complain because I wasn’t out to my family and I didn’t want to risk anything. One of my friends who owned a company in the same field asked me to join her venture, so she became my boss. A few months in, she approached me, saying that she came across my photos at pride on my social media page. Now I like to keep my IG public because there I like to express my queerness loudly. She approached me privately and asked me questions–What my orientation was, were my parents supportive? Did I have any past trauma? A lot of check in questions, basically. I was out to my family by this time so I answered freely. But in the back of my mind I was worried if she’d fire me so I ended up telling her about my previous workplace experience and asked her if she was going to do the same. Her response? A good heart to heart talk! She was incredibly sweet with me and that’s about it! She has been making efforts to understand the queer community better. She even asks me about the Pride events I attend, what do we celebrate in it, etc. My coworkers are also supportive, nobody has made me uncomfortable or bullied me based on what I am. Those who are friendly will occasionally strike up a conversation about queer community. As long as I’m not being disturbed, that in itself is a big deal because then I can just focus on my job. It’s nice to know that today I can just wear some nice nail art and enter the office and nobody makes a big fuss about it. I’d like if they’d talk more without me having to initiate conversations all the time. Once I initiate, they do chat but I wish more people would interact with the queer employees freely! Walls may talk but I break them down, Ganesh Goyal, 25 Male, Gay Interior Designer, Art & Design A project by Godrej Properties Limited and Gaysi Family Share your story here > https://lnkd.in/dh2sHED2 #QueeringWorkspaces #GodrejPropertiesLimited #GaysiFamily #WorkplaceDiversity #WorkplaceInclusion #LGBTQIA #Queer
