It is an honor to be one of the 22 grantees of DBS Foundation across Asia, and one of 4 from India. The grant is going to help us scale our plastics circularity, expand geographically and help our waste picker entrepreneurs to professionalize and then formalize. Thank you for recognizing the role of waste pickers and the informal waste sector to foster Inclusive Circularity(R).
Meet the 22 game-changing businesses making a real difference where it matters most! Since 2015, the DBS Foundation Grant has been supporting purpose-driven businesses to grow and scale their impact. This year, we’re backing a fresh wave of innovators who share our mission to uplift the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable communities — whether by providing essential needs like basic education, healthcare and clean water, or by fostering inclusion through upskilling, employment, and other opportunities. 𝗣𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿 𝗡𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶 𝗛𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀! We’re proud to support Lowe's India in their commitment to 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆! Nandi Hills—Bangalore’s favorite weekend getaway, where the air is fresher, the views are serene, and the city’s chaos feels kilometers away. But, with more visitors seeking this retreat, littering has become an increasing concern. To tackle this problem, Lowe's India, alongside Ramakrishna Ganesh, Plog Raja, 𝗕𝘂𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲, and our team, took action! Over 70 volunteers from Lowe’s India came together for a #Plogrun, collecting a staggering 150 kgs of waste. And we made sure it reached the 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. While the volunteers picked up trash around the Discovery Village at Nandi Hills, our co-founder Marwan Abubaker also led the group into thinking and understanding more about the waste. He also guided the team through key aspects of waste management, including: • 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 – understanding the policies that shape responsible waste handling. • 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲-𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 – why sorting waste into wet, dry, and reject is crucial. • 𝗪𝗲𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 can be processed into 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗴𝗮𝘀, 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗖𝗡𝗚 as a cleaner alternative to LPG— our joint venture with Carbon Masters is an example. • 𝗗𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 is 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗱 to minimize #landfill burden. • 𝗥𝗲𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 undergoes 𝗰𝗼-𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 or is sent to 𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘀 as a last resort. He also shed light on 𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, where incineration and landfilling have long been the norm. However, with partners like PadCare, we are making sanitary waste recycling a reality. The discussions also highlighted the tireless efforts of waste pickers and informal waste workers—the backbone of waste management—who work in all conditions to keep our cities clean. No conversation about waste is complete without recognizing their role. A big shoutout to our field supervisors, Vignesh Hasirudala and Hemanth, for ensuring seamless waste collection, transportation, and responsible processing. Special thanks to 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐁𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞 for their support! #Sustainability is a team effort. Whether you’re planning a Plogrun or an awareness session, we’ve got you covered! 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 – 𝗔 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗕𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗿𝘂 We were thrilled to be part of the “𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗗𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲” session, led by our colleague Nagraj, more popularly known as Plog Raja, at Christ University, Bangalore, where over 150 students gathered to dive deep into the world of waste management. We interact with waste every day, yet it remains an overlooked subject in our learning curriculum. We sincerely appreciate Christ University for creating this platform to introduce young minds to the realities of waste management. Nagraj’s session explored key aspects of waste, from the sheer volume our cities generate to what happens after it leaves their premises - home, office, or campus. While most discussions focus on waste as a resource, we often overlook the people who keep the system running—waste pickers and the informal waste sector. This also highlights the importance of our core ethos 𝙄𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝘾𝙞𝙧𝙘𝙪𝙡𝙖𝙧𝙞𝙩𝙮® – the deliberate and planned inclusion of waste pickers and the informal waste sector in the evolving circular economy value chain To drive meaningful change, one starts with awareness of the consequences of inaction and how as individuals they can translate that knowledge into action. The session covered topics such as: • Different types of waste we generate daily • The challenge of multi-layered plastics (MLPs) • Individual actions like mindful consumption, segregation at source, and saying NO to littering The session wrapped up with students taking a Sustainability Pledge, or as Raj calls it, their very own 𝗨𝗦𝗣 (𝗨𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲)—committing to small but impactful steps for a cleaner, more sustainable world.
