𝐁𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐆 - 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐝𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝘓𝘢𝘶𝘯𝘤𝘩 𝘰𝘧 𝘨𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩 𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘢𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘷𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘣𝘪𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘴𝘴 𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘶𝘦𝘴 I'm really happy to launch the first version of something my team had been working for the last 6 months - a global database of research taking place in converting diverse biomass residues to value. While most of us focus on the core product in a biomass - the rice grain, the sugar in sugarcane or the nut in a peanut - we should perhaps focus as much on the residue that is around this core product. Annually, the world generates about 5 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞, 𝐬𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐟 𝐚 𝐭𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫, 𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 2 𝐊𝐠 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐚𝐲! 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐭! For quite a while, I have been fascinated about the value that can be derived from biomass - surely, nature did not produce the fruit peels, plant stalks, nut shells, cobs, hulls, bark and more for us to burn them! While each of these has its core function - support for the plant, covering for the fruit or shell, producing the basic energy for the plant - each must be having lots of enough in them to be of great value besides their main use too! My curiosity became even greater when I read the fascinating story of Aida Batlle a coffee farmer from El Salvador who about two decades back figured out that the 𝐜𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐞𝐞 𝐡𝐮𝐬𝐤𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐚𝐰𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐫 𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐚 𝐰𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐟𝐥𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐮𝐦 𝐭𝐞𝐚 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐭. Thus was born Cascara, which is today sold even in Starbucks. If coffee husks can be used to make a product that is valued as much as coffee itself, that is something. Further reading showed how many 𝐟𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐥𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐛𝐞 𝐟𝐚𝐫 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐬 themselves, and how some residues contain high end 𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐟𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐀𝐥𝐳𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐫'𝐬. I invite those of you interested in knowing valuable stuff that can be derived from biomass residues to visit our newly launched BRING Database - which stands for Biomass Residue Intelligence Global Database. We have listed about 500 research and commercialization projects from around the world for a range of residues - categorized based on type of residue and the plant. This is the first version, and surely this will grow and grow, and change and change. I also plan to get the international research community to contribute to this and make it some sort of an open source database that can add value to all stakeholders.
