Shri Sanjay Pant, Dy Director General (Standardization), BIS presented a paper and delivered a Plenary Talk on 'Comprehensive Approach towards Fire and Life Safety through Indian Standards and National Building Code of India (NBC)' in the Asia Fire Safety Expo-2024 and International Seminar, organized by Centre for Fire Explosive and Environment Safety, DRDO, Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India on 21 November 2024 in New Delhi. He explained the four pillars of safety, namely Structural Safety, Fire Safety, Health Safety and Public Safety, around which the NBC is evolved. His talk focused on the concept of fire prevention, life safety and fire protection as enshrined in the standards and NBC, and the ongoing revisions contemplated in the Code. NITS, the training wing of BIS organized a two-day Capsule Course on Disaster Mitigation and Management during 25-26 November at its campus in Noida. The programme was attended by 26 participants from organisations like DRDO, BARC, DGQA, NCRTC, BEL, ITBP, Delhi Jal Board, IIT (BHU), State Administrative Institutes of Haryana, Punjab and Chhattisgarh, Hindalco, Adani Energy and Deloitte. The module was designed to cover technical aspects for natural disaster risk mitigation as well as societal aspects like emergency management and post disaster needs assessment. One important feedback received during the programme was to invite Chief Risk/Emergency Officers of organizations like Tata, Mahindra, Adani, etc who already have a consortium for sharing best practices for risk mitigation and emergency management, for sharing their knowledge with the participants of the training.
