This year, we've seen loads of research papers, but the one that truly caught our attention was from the State of Global Air 2024 Report. Here are some of the major takeaways that should leave us all deeply concerned: 🚨 Over 8 million deaths globally in 2021 were linked to air pollution—more than car accidents, malaria, and HIV/AIDS combined. 💨 PM2.5, the invisible threat, is the primary culprit. These tiny particles come from burning fossil fuels, industrial activities, and biomass, causing: - Heart disease - Lung cancer - Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) - Stroke - Diabetes 🇮🇳 In India, the impact is even worse: - 28% of ischemic heart disease deaths are caused by air pollution. - 48% of COPD deaths are directly linked to toxic air. ⚠️ This is a health emergency we can no longer ignore. 🚨 The 2024 Air Quality Life Index (AQLI) by the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago (EPIC) reveals some of the most alarming insights on air pollution in India—and the future looks concerning. Here’s what you need to know: 📉 Life Expectancy Impact: - 5.2 years: Average life expectancy lost due to pollution exceeding WHO guidelines. - 9.4 years: Life expectancy cut in the National Capital—Delhi. - 10.3 years: Lucknow faces the steepest loss, with pollution levels 11x the WHO limit. 🌍 84% of Indians live in areas exceeding the country’s air quality standards. 📈 Particulate pollution has risen 42% since 1998, cutting 1.8 years off average life expectancy. 👥 248 million people are exposed to pollution levels higher than anywhere else globally, risking a life expectancy drop of 8+ years if levels persist. To address this, we partnered with the esteemed Lovely Professional University under the leadership of Sorabh Lakhanpal, PhD, Dean Division of Student Welfare - LPU, to host “Mission Panga”, a hackathon that brought together some of the brightest young minds to brainstorm innovative solutions to combat air pollution and its impact on health. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐓𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐝: 💡Community Engagement App: Enable reporting of pollution incidents with gamified incentives for action. 💡AI Health Assistant: A smart companion to guide healthier lifestyles. 💡Swashth App: Monitor lung health through a simple breath test. 💡Data Solutions: Customizable pollution data for organizations. 💡Carbon Capture Model: A prototype addressing air quality restoration. 💡Eco Agritech: Sustainable solutions for agriculture and environment. The enthusiasm and commitment of these students reflected the power of collective problem-solving and innovation. These solutions are promising, but ideas alone are not enough—they need implementation.
