How many companies and consultants have you come across over the past year who vowed to “assist” you in your net zero journey? Keywords being thrown around like confetti but what does net zero actually mean? There is a recent article on the OPEC website that a UK government survey published in July 2024 found that 91% of respondents had heard of net zero, but only 17% knew a lot about it. So let us check some examples - The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defines "net zero" as a state where "anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gases are balanced by anthropogenic removals over a specified period."  Similarly, the UK's House of Commons Library explains that "in practice, net zero means that total greenhouse gas emissions are equal to the carbon removed from the atmosphere." The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) defines "net zero" as the point when human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are balanced by human-caused removals over a specified period. While these definitions do show a path, the path to net zero is quite far from being linear. Achieving this balance requires a combination of deep emissions reductions, technological removals, and nature-based solutions. The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries states that global net zero ambitions must account for energy security, economic growth, and technological advancements while considering the principle of "common but differentiated responsibilities". This principle recognises that developing nations require equitable pathways to transition, balancing emissions mitigation with socio-economic imperatives. In the context of carbon markets, net zero frameworks drive the demand for high-integrity carbon credits. Integrity and quality being key words again, because ultimately, net zero is not just about achieving an emissions balance on paper but about actually implementing systemic change to decarbonise. Carbon markets are evolving. They are expanding beyond Carbon dioxide to include biodiversity, soil health, water, plastic and even nuclear. While biodiversity credits have been under discussion for years, the market is now advancing to include credits for soil health, water conservation, plastic mitigation, and even nuclear. This shift is a reflection of the complex connection between carbon sequestration, ecosystem integrity, and other sustainability goals. Soil carbon markets, for instance, are gaining traction as methodologies improve for measuring and verifying soil organic carbon sequestration. Water-related credit systems are emerging to incentivise watershed restoration, groundwater recharge, and pollution reduction. Plastic credits are being developed to address ocean pollution and other circular economy initiatives. Nuclear credits- now that is a whole new chapter which we will discuss in due course. The World Economic Forum has observed that "expanding credit markets for carbon, water and biodiversity are driving private investment and bridging gaps in global sustainability finance." However, how many of the co benefits we talk about are PR exercises and how many of them, real - now that is a question that begs to be answered.
