As part of our World Environment Day series, CGAPP is thrilled to bring you another powerful segment from our interview with Meera Chandran of Forest First Samiti. 🌿 We delved into how land degradation in the Himalayas and Western Ghats impacts #urban areas. Meera emphasized that the connection is through water. Urban centers, including major #metros, depend on #water from #forest lands. She highlighted that around 600 rivers originate from #India's tiger reserves, illustrating the direct link between city dwellers and these ecosystems. She shared how #Bangalore’s reliance on the Kaveri River showcases the critical role of forests. The Kaveri water dispute and recent water shortages demonstrate the consequences of degraded forest lands. Explaining that healthy #forests act as natural sponges, absorbing and gradually releasing water, whereas degraded lands lose this capacity, leading to #floods and droughts.
