Public Notice: Draft Rules on Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging made from paper, glass and metal as well as sanitary products. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) has released the Draft Environment Protection (Extended Producer Responsibility for Packaging Materials and Sanitary Products) Rules, 2024. These rules, proposed on 9th December 2024, are formulated under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. Scope of the Rules The draft rules aim to implement circular economy principles for packaging made from paper, glass, and metal (excluding non-ferrous-based packaging) and sanitary products. Key objectives include: - Enhancing recycling efforts - Promoting the use of recycled content - Creating economic growth opportunities, including green jobs and fostering innovation. - Effective Date - The rules are proposed to take effect on 1st April 2026. Public Feedback Invited: The draft rules are open for public review. Stakeholders are encouraged to submit objections or suggestions within 60 days of the publication date in the Gazette of India.
