🚨 Ensuring Health Protection for Platform Workers: A Policy Imperative 🚨 As noted in the Economic Survey 2024–25, digital platforms are transforming the nature of work in India, offering flexibility, accessibility, and economic opportunities—particularly for youth and disadvantaged groups. With 7.7 million platform workers in 2021, projected to grow to 23.3 million by 2030, the gig economy is becoming a crucial driver of employment. However, sustaining this growth requires prioritizing worker well-being through universal health coverage and comprehensive social protection. 🔍 Our recent blog post by Dr. Shahnawaz Khan and Prakash Gupta have following highlights: 📌 Significance of extending PM-JAY to Gig and Platform Workers through Union Budget 2024-25 📌 Aggregators acknowledge the need for social protection and have introduced accident and medical benefits, including telemedicine consultations and discounted diagnostics. 📌 Rising health insurance costs (12–15% annual increase between 2021–2023) make it challenging for platforms to provide comprehensive health protection on their own. 📌 Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY, the world's largest public health insurance scheme, offers cashless coverage up to ₹5,00,000 per family annually, but exclusionary criteria, such as vehicle ownership prevent many gig workers from accessing it. 📌 Linking PM-JAY with the e-Shram portal and removing these exclusions would allow platform workers to benefit from essential health coverage. 📢 Read more in our latest study, co-authored by Dr. Shahnawaz Khan and Prakash Gupta from OMI Foundation, as we continue advocating for inclusive and equitable policies for the future of work: https://shorturl.at/R7JHY #WorldSocialJusticeDay #SocialProtectionForAll #GigWork #PMJAY #PlatformWork

Indian cities are at a critical juncture—balancing rapid urbanisation, climate resilience, and economic growth. The Economic Survey 2024-25 highlights the pivotal role of active and shared mobility—including carpooling—in decarbonising transport and shaping sustainable urban futures. But to truly build a Viksit Bharat, cities must go beyond infrastructure expansion and rethink governance, planning, and investment strategies. The 15th Finance Commission has allocated ₹16,579 crores over five years for 42 million-plus cities to improve air quality. This is a much-needed push, but the challenge remains—how do we ensure financially sustainable, high-impact urban projects that enhance livability and economic dynamism? To thrive, Indian cities must: ✅ Reform urban governance and planning to drive inclusive, data-driven decisions. ✅ Perform by improving quality-of-life indices and ease of doing business. ✅ Transform into global hubs that attract talent, investment, and innovation. As cities navigate the complex challenges of climate change, congestion, and economic shifts, this is the moment to act boldly—embracing sustainable mobility, resilient infrastructure, and people-centric urban policies. Roshan Toshniwal, in his Op-Ed for NDTV Profit, writes about these pressing issues and the way forward for Indian cities. Let’s drive the conversation forward! What key reforms do you think are needed to make Indian cities future-ready? 💬👇 📖 Read more: https://rb.gy/wd5mto #UrbanMobility #SustainableCities #ViksitBharat #FutureMobility

RAISE Framework for Designing Social Protection Programs! The Code on Social Security 2020 marks an inflection point in India's labour landscape by delinking social protection from traditional employment. This shift has the potential to unlock livelihood opportunities for millions—but its success depends on how we design social protection that is progressively universal and responsive to the evolving nature of work. To achieve this, OMI Foundation proposes the RAISE Framework, a five-pronged approach to strengthening social security for platform workers: 🔹 Recognise the varied nature of platform work to design equitable schemes 🔹 Allow augmentation of social security through innovative financing mechanisms 🔹 Institutionalise a scientific approach while designing schemes, factoring in job creation, platform businesses, and workers 🔹 Support workers in subscribing to government schemes and welfare programmes through widespread awareness campaigns 🔹 Ensure benefits are readily accessible to workers By embedding these guiding principles, India can lead in redefining social protection for the future of work. The question now is: How can policymakers, platforms, and stakeholders collaborate to make this vision a reality? Join the conversation! ⬇️ Read More: https://lnkd.in/gxVDDbDP #SocialSecurity #PlatformWork #GigEconomy #FutureOfWork #LabourPolicy #OMIFoundation #WorldSocialJusticeDay #SocialProtectionforAll

India’s Green Hydrogen Push: Transforming Heavy Transport & Maritime Sectors ⚡🌱 Green hydrogen is set to revolutionise India’s energy landscape, offering a sustainable solution for heavy transport and the maritime industry. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), India aims to produce 5 MMT of green hydrogen by 2030, powered by 125 GW of renewable energy capacity. 🚀🔋 Over the past year, India has made notable progress—from policy rollouts and increased budgets to pilot projects and infrastructure expansion. In a recent Op-Ed published in Sustainability Karma ,ARUNIMA KT from OMI Foundation discusses how hydrogen can be integrated into heavy-duty trucking, rail and maritime operations, driving a cleaner, self-reliant energy future. While cost challenges and infrastructure gaps persist, strategic investments, policy support, and global best practices can accelerate India’s hydrogen transition. 🚆 Will hydrogen mobility be the next big leap in sustainable transport? Let’s discuss! 📖 Read the full article by Arunima KT here: https://lnkd.in/gKKkj8_x #GreenHydrogen #HydrogenMobility #SustainableTransport #OMIFoundation

🚀 India’s Platform Workforce: Scaling New Heights 🇮🇳 India is a global leader in platform labour, contributing 20% of the world’s platform workforce (ILO, 2024). With 7.7 million platform workers in 2021, this number is projected to grow to 23.5 million by 2030, representing 6.7% of the non-agricultural workforce (NITI Aayog, 2022). As the platform economy expands, it is crucial to ensure innovative and inclusive social security measures that cater to its unique workforce. Recognizing this need, the Government of India launched the e-Shram portal in 2021, aiming to extend social security benefits to all unorganised workers, including gig and platform workers. 🔹 Key Features of the e-Shram Portal: ✅ Unique 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN) valid across India ✅ Integration with the National Career Service (NCS) Portal for job opportunities ✅ Linked with Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan (PM-SYM) – a pension scheme for unorganised workers (18–40 years) ✅ Captures family details of migrant workers for targeted support ✅ Connected with the Skill India Digital Portal to enhance skills and apprenticeships ✅ One-stop solution for multiple worker categories – gig workers, platform workers, construction workers, migrant workers, and more The portal integrates key Central Government schemes. Additionally, e-Shram is integrated with myScheme, a national platform that helps workers discover and access relevant government welfare schemes. As India’s platform economy grows, strengthening social security mechanisms will be key to ensuring sustainable and equitable development. 💡 How can we further improve social security for platform workers? Recent blog post by Dr. Shahnawaz Khan, Former Lead, Centre for Inclusive Mobility write about the initiatives undertaken by Central and State Governments in India for the social security of gig and platform workers in India.
