Joining hands with India in Gender Equality in STEM!
Today, we arranged SheSTEM! SheSTEM is an annual activity at the Embassy of Sweden and this year we collaborated with our Nordic friends Norway, Finland, and Denmark together with Indian organization Atal Innovation Mission to promote STEM to young women.
We did three things:
1. We invited four successful Indian women to share their experiences and knowledge about STEM and how it is to work within STEM. They shared interesting initiatives, achievements, and ongoing challenges in integrating young women into the workforce, and to promote STEM as a field of study. We had students and teachers listening in the audience. The topic is very import - Women in STEM still (globally) face wage gaps and under-representation in leadership positions.
2. This year SheSTEM was part of another Nordic joint activity promoting Battery Energy Storage as a field of study, research, and business where Nordic-India can benefit from collaborating. The gathering today was therefore also an opportunity to celebrate and award the winners of a nation-wide competition we did within the Nordic project where young students were to pitch ideas within the field of energy storage that would be of future global benefit. We received more than one thousand contributions from different student groups from all over India in this competition!
3. We also had a fika! The Nordics love the combination of coffee and buns! 😊
I believe that gender equality needs a holistic approach, which combines government policy, educational reform, corporate responsibility, and cultural change. Achieving equality requires systemic change, persistence, and collective effort. Let us continue to challenge norms, support one another, and dismantle the barriers that hold back half of humanity's potential!
