On 12 November, OSI Tokyo made a visit to the Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA) at Kyoto University with Ambassador Li. Director and Deputy Director of CiRA welcomed us and we participated in a briefing on what research is conducted and the mission of the Center. CiRA introduced the equipment and instruments of the facility. The visit was part of our participation at the celebration of the newly constructed Bristol Myers Squibb Building for the Center for Cancer Immunotherapy and Immunology at Kyoto University.

On 12 November Ambassador from Sweden to Japan, Viktoria Li, had the pleasure to attend the Opening Ceremony for the newly constructed Bristol Myers Squibb Building which will serve as the hub for activities of the Center for Cancer Immunotherapy and Immunology at Kyoto University. During the visit Ambassador Li gave a congratulatory speech and met with top researchers in the field of science and medicine with experiences from Swedish universities and institutes. As Sweden and Japan share many collaborations in the field of research such as Stockholm Trio and University of Tokyo but also the Mirai collaboration, this visit by the Ambassador shows the importance of Swedish and Japanese research exchange.

On 6 November 2024 Professor Svante Pääbo, the Nobel Laureate in Physiology or Medicine 2022, took part as a guest speaker at JSS Annual Nobel Dinner 2024 where he spoke on the theme “An Archaic Perspective on the Origin of Modern Humans”. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for his discoveries concerning the genomes of extinct hominis and human evolution. He is currently Professor of Genetics and Evolutionary Biology at Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology and Adjunct Professor at Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST). https://lnkd.in/d4rBMabk

Tohoku university was chosen by the Japanese education ministry to receive research grants amounting hundreds of billions of yen at the beginning of fiscal 2025. The grants come from a 10 trillion yen (65 billion USD) fund, part of the Japanese government’s aim to raise the global rankings of Japanese universities. Tohoku University was selected for their ambitious aspirations and clear structures of targets for reforming their research organizations and management systems, as outlined in 19 specific strategies. https://lnkd.in/dzfgxKTW

On 22 October the OSI had the honor to visit one of the robotics labs at the University of Tokyo where the latest developments were presented and displayed. After the lab visit a symposium on robotics was held as part of the academic collaboration between University of Tokyo and Stockholm-Trio. During this event researchers and students from KTH, one of the Stockholm Trio universities, and the University of Tokyo presented their latest research.

On 23 October Stockholm Trio-the University of Tokyo Workshop of 2024 was held. The purpose of this workshop was to share research and findings in the area of decarbonization, energy tech, policy, climate change and sustainability. The Ambassador of Sweden to Japan, Victoria Li, had the pleasure to give a speech during the event to highlight the importance of this significant collaboration between Sweden and Japan in the area of research.

On 20th September, the memorandum on extension of agreement on academic exchange has been signed between Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, The University of Tokyo and Swedish University of Agricultural Science. This year marks their 20th anniversary of their collaboration. The event took place at The University of Tokyo at the presence of researchers from the two universities. The purpose of this agreement is to prolong the cooperation in research, exchange of students and researchers but also exchange of academic information and materials. Congratulations!
