Although tech in construction is well talked about, few have been able to understand the nuanced challenges of the industry and develop products/ solutions that meet the need of the hour. Robotics in construction would thus be at the farther end of the spectrum. We took a bet on a sapling of a startup 3 years ago, when their product was just on the drawing board. On our panel on "Sustainable - is it Commercially Viable?", at #BuildingBonds2024, we wanted to address this upfront - not from an academic or a VC lens but from an industry perspective. In Srikanth Iyer, we found the right moderator keeping a middle ground between the industry veterans and the startups while - most importantly, keeping it simple. While Adithya Jain elaborated on the long uphill journey of 3D printing in India, Srinivas K Pai explained the benefits of robotics in construction. Rajkamal Agarwal spelt the guidelines wrt ESG that goes into decision making at at L&T Innovation Fund. And all narratives were balanced by Sagar Gandhi bringing in the much needed industry perspective from Shapoorji Pallonji - Engineering & Construction (SP E&C) . One of our earliest investments in the home fitout space was HomeLane . The ever so articulate Srikanth Iyer and Tanuj Choudhry have always reminded us of how one book changed the course for them. 'No business in service delivery can be great at everything it does', they believe. We believe their pioneering journey also did change the course of the home fitout space for all of us. #latepost Disruptive is definitely one of the most commonly used words in the startup ecosystem. But, what does it mean to be truly disruptive? How does a VC identify a disruptor early? We had these questions answered threadbare at #BuildingBonds2024 by a panel comprising of the Davids of the ecosystem themselves. Moderated by Arindam Paul, a disruptor in his own right, we had Gopikrishnan V and Akshansh Agarwal letting us in on the 'how to disrupt', while Raiyaan Shingati and Siddarth Pai gave us the VC perspective of spotting a disruptor early. An engaging discussion followed and guess what? The panel unanimously agreed that the Davids of today could become Goliaths themselves unless the very same agility and nimbleness are preserved.
