I spoke to BW Businessworld on how MSMEs can benefit from e-commerce and how the regulatory arbitrage created by a myopic siloed approach to e-commerce can infact hinder the growth of MSMEs and end up being a huge deterent to digital adoption. While it is certainly important to ensure fair practices, the rules for fair play are applicable to all formats of retail irrespective of format or origin of capital. At Policy Consensus Centre we believe that India needs a unified retail policy that treats all channels of sale equitable for the greatest good of the sector and the country.

PRESS | Our director, Meghna Bal, was recently invited to speak on a discussion panel hosted by the The Policy Consensus Centre (PCC) titled "Unlocking Seller Autonomy: Ensuring Transparency and Fair Competition," that brought together experts to address critical regulatory challenges impacting MSMEs in India’s e-commerce landscape. In a news report on the event published by BW Businessworld, Bal is quoted to have said: “An emerging trend in antitrust is the tendency to narrow the market scope, which inadvertently increases the likelihood of large firms being labelled as dominant. This focus on large online marketplaces as dominant players is fundamentally flawed." Bal mentioned that as retail evolves, especially online retail, there are many joint ventures increasingly concentrated in the hands of a few players, spanning both offline and online sectors. This reality underscores the need for a nuanced understanding of market dynamics considering the complexities of both retail formats.
