The Pranava Institute organised an Expert Research Consultation to discuss our preliminary findings and key questions on #GenerativeAI Systems in the Public Sector in India last week. The session was co-steered by Prof. Georgina Curto, PhD, MBA from University of Notre Dame, and supported by the Notre Dame-IBM Tech Ethics Lab. Prof. Rex shared insights from her work on AI in South Africa, focussed on #AIforGood, AI for public policy, and community-driven AI applications. In the two-hour long discussion, we unpacked: 1. What makes Gen AI applications in the public sector different from private sector ones- especially when used for citizen-facing service delivery applications? 2. Where can values for using AI in the Public Sector be drawn from? 3. Who drives, and should drive, AI adoption in the public sector? What are their key drivers and incentives? 4. What values do current community projects and applications center? How can we learn from these? We’re thrilled to announce that The Pranava Institute’s Co-Founders, Shyam Krishnakumar and Titiksha Vashist, have been selected as fellows in the prestigious Global AI & Market Power Fellowship by the European AI & Society Fund! They will partner with Isha Suri on this project, “Democratising AI Infrastructure with Open Cloud Compute,” which will explore how open cloud computing can drive inclusivity and reduce market power imbalances in AI ecosystems. This project investigates whether a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)-based approach to open cloud computing for AI, aided by enabling policy and technical frameworks can counteract market concentration in compute infrastructure by promoting interoperability, decentralization, and regulatory measures to prevent dominance. The project also aims to propose regulatory measures and offer evidence-based recommendations to guide India's AI regulation and DPI governance. Pranava co-founder Shyam Krishnakumar was an expert panellist in a recent inclusive digitalisation workshop hosted by the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS). The panel brought together global experts Kudzai Maraire Mubaiwa FSA™ of AfriLabs and Alexandra Darby of FEMYSO. Shyam shared insights on Digital Public Infrastructure in India, highlighting its role in promoting inclusivity and driving digital transformation, and shared ongoing work at the institute on these themes. Together, the panellists engaged in a vibrant discussion on fostering equitable access, addressing systemic inequalities, and enabling meaningful participation in the digital age. This conversation emphasised the critical need for intersectional approaches to combat bias and marginalisation and build a fair digital future. We are delighted to see our Unpacking Deceptive Design series being cited in the European Commission's fitness check for the EU Consumer Law on Digital Fairness. The fitness check cites Shweta M. and Saumyaa Naidu’s excellent piece on ‘Deceptive Design in Voice Interfaces” from the research series which critically examines how voice interfaces(VIs) can perpetuate deceptive design practices impacting inclusivity, accessibility and privacy. The European Commission referenced our work in the context of how interface design, particularly in virtual assistants, can limit consumer autonomy by exercising undue influence. From manipulating pitch, rate, and volume to perpetuating gender stereotypes, these practices underscore the need for a consumer-centric approach to digital fairness.
