Making Legal Tech Make Sense: From Code to Culture | LinkedIn Top Voice

8 things #legaltech can learn from #healthtech Stumbled upon this very interesting article by Edward Bukstel that looks to the similarities between digital healthcare and #legaltech (link in comments). Here's my take on the key takeaways: 1. Leveling the Information Playing Field (Reduce Information Asymmetry) Legal tech and digital health are working to bridge the knowledge gap between professionals and their clients/patients. This follows the basic economic idea that markets work best when everyone's well-informed. By making info and ratings more accessible, these technologies help consumers make smarter choices. 2. Cutting Down on Hassle and Costs (Transaction Cost Reduction; See Coase Theorem) By combining scheduling, document handling, and communication tools, both sectors are making things simpler and cheaper. This fits with Ronald Coase's ideas about how technology can lower the costs of doing business and potentially change how industries are structured. 3. The More, the Merrier (Leveraging Network Effect) Platforms like Avvo and Zocdoc use the power of crowds. In digital economics, this is called network effects. As more people use these platforms, they become more valuable for everyone, creating a positive feedback loop of growth and usefulness. 4. Shaking Up the Middlemen (Disintermediation and Reintermediation; See Creative Destruction) These technologies are changing who does what in legal and health services. It's like creative destruction in action - new tech disrupts the old way of doing things but also opens up new possibilities and roles. 5. Making Decisions Based on Data The move to digital platforms means more data can be collected and analyzed. This fits with the scientific approach of basing decisions on evidence, leading to more fact-based practices in both law and healthcare. 6. Tailoring Services to Individuals (Read Client Centered Law Firm by Jack Newton, CEO Clio - Cloud-Based Legal Technology) The trend towards personalized client portals and services is about maximizing value for each person. By offering custom-fit services, these technologies aim to give each client or patient exactly what they need. 7. The Challenge of Making Everything Work Together (See System Thinking and System Change; Read Thinking in Systems) The article points out the difficulties healthcare has had with getting different systems to communicate. This is a heads-up for legal tech about the importance of thinking about how all the parts of a system need to work together. 8. Managing the Shift to New Tech (Read Diffusion Theory; Legal Evolution) The different speeds at which people adopt new technologies reflects the theory of how innovations spread. Understanding what makes people embrace or resist new tech is key to successfully bringing these changes into traditional fields like law and healthcare.

Making Legal Tech Make Sense: From Code to Culture | LinkedIn Top Voice

Observations from Teaching "Access to Justice through Legal Tech" at National Academy of Legal Studies & Research (NALSAR) University Hyderabad As we reach the last day of the course, I look back to what I’ve learnt the past week thinking more about the intersection of law, justice and technology. 1. The Triad: Problem, Solution, and Commerciality A2J through Legal Tech requires balancing social impact, economic viability, and scalability. While initial implementation costs may be high, tech solutions offer long-term benefits in reach and efficiency. As these solutions scale, we anticipate a democratization of legal services, potentially disrupting traditional models and improving accessibility. Do look to how Glific OpenNyAI Gavel jhana are operating in this space. 2. Systems Thinking in Legal Innovation The legal system is a complex, adaptive network where changes in one area ripple throughout (see JB Ruhl’s work for more). This necessitates a holistic approach to A2J solutions. Innovations may lead to unexpected shifts in legal practices, altering traditional professional roles and requiring adaptability from practitioners. 3. Democratization of Legal Tech Current state of tech, especially emerging technologies like LLMs and GPTs are democratizing A2J solution creation. This empowers individuals to build impactful baseline tech, potentially disrupting service delivery. While this opens doors for innovation, it also raises questions about quality control and the role of legal expertise in tech development. 4. Bridging Law and Entrepreneurship Integrating entrepreneurship education with legal studies creates versatile professionals equipped for the evolving legal landscape. This interdisciplinary approach fosters innovation in addressing A2J needs and prepares future lawyers to navigate both legal and business realms effectively. (One of our well received sessions was building and scaling LegalTech solutions run by my co-instructor, Devarsh Saraf 😀)

What’s the secret to a successful, scaleable law practice?   Processes. Yup. They’re the French drains of the legal world. Boring, but necessary (at least in my part of the world).   If you don't have a written process for a task you do more than once: ❌ routine tasks will take longer than they should (especially if you don't do them very often) ❌ errors will creep in ❌ you won’t be able to delegate work quickly, and ❌ you can forget about scaling your practice.   Instead, join our free webinar and learn to: ✅ Create processes using our simple step-by-step method ✅ Use AI to write them faster ✅ Build a library of SOPs that will save you time and make you money ✅ Use your SOPs to facilitate delegation and drive up your productivity   Register today!
