About us
Rainmatter Climate Foundation is a Zerodha-sponsored initiative focused on fostering and assisting ideas that help preserve and regenerate ecosystems. We believe that this needs both direct interventions as well as the enablement of larger platforms that involve a mainstream understanding of the need and benefits of these efforts while also scaling participation in them beyond the philanthropic efforts of a few. Indeed we do not see this as charity; it is an investment into our own future and wellbeing. Amongst our core beliefs is that moving to a green economy and creating green jobs is an essential part of the changes needed for a better ecology. We also think that this needs to happen in a distributed fashion across geographies, with value and job creation everywhere and not being limited to a few urban centres. Reversing both migration and concentration of value, wealth and resources are a major need towards this and will also need a strengthening of public goods and services across India. Rainmatter Climate Foundation is uniquely positioned to influence these efforts in terms of the market and technology skills and partnerships we bring to the table. Additionally, we are committing a $100mn fund towards this over the coming few years. This will be disbursed as grants and funding for projects in the above directions that become replicable models. It will also be used for the creation of open, collaborative platforms that cross-pollinate and scale many good ideas and successful experiments and help create a green economy everywhere. This includes our commitments to funding open-source efforts that help create projects and platforms for climate change and related efforts. Rainmatter Foundation is also incubating and investing in entrepreneurship that helps with these directions and helps move towards a greener, more equitable, and lower footprint economy.

What small tradeoffs can we make in our kitchen to create a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle? The easiest way to do this is by focusing on ingredients rather than recipes. We can simply start by choosing locally available, seasonal produce instead of exotic, off-season foods. Recently, Sameer Sisodia, CEO, Rainmatter Foundation, shared an interesting insight on the Good Food Talks podcast. He spoke about how the globalized food culture, driven by the hospitality industry, has made non-seasonal and imported ingredients widely popular. While these options may seem exciting, they often lack the nutritional value of fresh, in-season produce and come with a significant environmental cost. Seasonal eating, on the other hand, offers numerous advantages. It provides better nutrition, boosts immunity, and supports eco-friendly practices. They are also eco-friendly, as they support local farmers and reduce the environmental impact of long-distance food transportation. As we embrace the global food culture, it’s essential to reconnect with the benefits of seasonal, locally grown foods, promoting a healthier lifestyle and supporting sustainable practices in the process. We've all been there— the thrill of an adventure often comes with a forgotten consequence. It's easy to overlook how every step we take and every piece of waste we leave behind impacts the places we visit. 😔 A snack wrapper left on the trail, a plastic bottle tossed into the water, seems small, but over time, these actions accumulate. And before we know it, the very beauty we seek to enjoy is marred by the marks we leave. The idea of "Leave No Trace" isn’t just about picking up after ourselves. It’s about rethinking how we travel, how we interact with nature, and how we can protect it for future generations. It’s about planning ahead, respecting the spaces we visit, and doing our part to leave nature untouched. 😇 As we explore new places this holiday season, can we pause and reflect, “What footprints are we leaving behind, and how might they affect the land, wildlife, and others who follow?” Waste Warriors Society #wastewarriors #rainmatterfoundation #climateaction #conscioustravel #leavenotrace

Our Millet Culinary Workshop in Bhopal was a heartwarming and flavourful affair hosted at the ever-inviting Cafe Amado! Whether seasoned with millets or new to the grain, attendees enthusiastically embraced the experience, discovering just how versatile and delicious millets can be. The day began with a vibrant salad demonstration by our very own Thomas Zacharias, showcasing foxtail, kodo, and little millet paired with a roasted tomato dressing and garlic yoghurt. Topped with pickled tendli, tender red amaranth, and charred corn kernels, the salad celebrated local produce and sustainable cooking. Chef Meenal Rai Shejwar of Cafe Amado followed with her innovative take on a classic favourite: Kodo Millet Poha. Crispy choulai, sev, and local greens added a nutritious twist, blending tradition with creativity. For the main course, Sayani Sengupta, our Millet Cooking Lab lead, brought the flavours of Bhopal alive with her Proso Millet and Yam Chaat—an ode to garadu chaats and galouti kebabs. This inventive dish demonstrated how millets can elevate even traditional, iconic recipes. The day ended sweetly with Sayani’s indulgent Ragi Chhena Malpua, paired with a dried Mahua Flower Rabdi. It was incredibly gratifying to engage with Locavores in Bhopal and witness their active participation in discussions about bringing these heritage grains back to our plates in creative and imaginative ways. We also created a Millet Cookbook as a parting gift for attendees. We are immensely grateful to the Cafe Amado team for being the perfect hosts, to our volunteers Chakshi and Vanshika for their invaluable support, and to Rainmatter Foundation for championing this journey. The reality of what we find is changing faster than we expect. This serves as a reminder that our choices—where we travel to, how we consume, what we prioritize, the products we support, how we treat nature, and the habits we cultivate—shape these results. It’s not too late to change the outcome. Small, conscious actions by individuals and communities can rewrite this narrative. #climateaction #consciousliving

A farmer’s most reliable assets are water, soil, biodiversity and knowledge of the biodiversity. At a time when all these forces of nature are increasingly affected due to climate change, is it possible to build a farm that is self-sufficient? What does a farm that works in harmony with nature look like. Here we share an example of such a farm, one that is harnessing the natural resources to become climate resilient. Watch the full video (link in the comments) to find out why this is happening and what it means for the future of our plate. What does it take to solve complex climate challenges? Isolated efforts in select areas can’t address the scale of the issues we face today. What’s needed is collaboration across governments, markets, grassroots organisations, and civil society. It’s about working together, not in silos, to tackle systemic problems while staying grounded and open to learning from those closest to the challenges. The thesis leads and CEO of Rainmatter Foundation reflect on the power of partnerships, the need for humility, and the importance of leveraging existing expertise. They share insights on how systemic thinking—integrating a climate lens into rural, urban planning, conservation and energy systems, can create lasting impact. #worldsoilday 🌱 | Soil is the foundation of life—our food, water, and ecosystems all depend on it. Yet, India’s Soil Organic Carbon (SOC) has dropped from 1% to just 0.3% over the past 70 years, severely impacting fertility, water retention, and biodiversity. How we use soil varies across rural and urban spaces. In rural areas, soil sustains crops and biodiversity, providing the food we eat. In cities, it often lies beneath concrete, used to build rather than grow. This difference shapes how we must care for it. In rural landscapes, measuring, monitoring, and managing soil health means addressing overuse, tracking organic matter, and supporting sustainable farming. In urban areas, it’s about rethinking how we consume, composting food scraps, reducing waste, and creating green spaces to give soil a chance to thrive. Rainmatter works with Soil Vasu and other partner organisations to bring together farmers, researchers, and soil health experts to explore how farmer-friendly tools like the Soil Biodiversity Atlas can help communities restore and protect soil health. These efforts highlight how rural and urban actions are deeply connected in safeguarding the soil we all rely on. Read the full blog— https://lnkd.in/gpSDHV6b
