Women Behind The Wheels - Gendered Nature of Transport-Based Gig Work in South Asia: A Research Study The transport-based gig economy is expanding rapidly across South Asia, yet women remain underrepresented and face unique challenges in accessing these opportunities. Despite the global surge in gig platforms, with the number of gig workers increasing by 220% between 2016 and 2023, women’s participation in the gig economy remains low. According to International Labour Organization data, the female labor force participation rate (FLPR) in Asian countries continues to be significantly below the global average, indicating that the platform economy has not led to a substantial increase in women’s workforce participation in the region. Safetipin, supported by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, has undertaken comprehensive research to identify the barriers women face in entering and thriving in this sector across five South Asian countries: #India, #Bangladesh, #Pakistan, #Nepal, and #SriLanka. Our study examines specific challenges, such as safety concerns, lack of financial support, and limited access to foundational resources. We also explore best practices to support women, including gender-segregated rides, addressing unlawful conduct, and providing financial and foundational support to create a more inclusive environment for women in this space. Key insights from the study include: 👉 The gender divide in gig economy participation 👉 Barriers faced by women gig workers 👉 Best practices for supporting women in the gig economy 🔗 Access the full publication here to dive deep into these challenges and explore actionable solutions to bridge the gap: https://lnkd.in/gmQmBnQ8 #Safetipin #MySafetipin #WomenInGigEconomy #GenderEquity #EconomicEmpowerment #TransportSector #SouthAsia #GigEconomy Kalpana Viswanath Ankita Kapoor Ria Kasliwal Mohini Singh Transformative Urban Mobility Initiative Women Mobilize Women OLA Foundation Gates Foundation India Azad Foundation India UN Women Asia and the Pacific Womennovator ( Global Incubator for Women) Womanity The Asia Foundation Purpose Young Leaders for Active Citizenship (YLAC) The Women's Foundation The Social Mobility Foundation Women in Transport Changing Transport Urda Eichhorst Women in Mobility - WIM Women in Mobility

🌍 New Publication Alert: Women Behind The Wehels - Gendered Nature of Transport-Based Gig Work in South Asia The gig economy has transformed work structures globally, offering flexibility and new opportunities. Yet, its potential remains largely untapped in South Asia’s transport sector, particularly for women. Despite the rapid expansion of gig platforms—growing tenfold between 2007 and 2020—women's participation in on-demand ride-hailing and delivery services remains alarmingly low. This is particularly stark in the Global South, which generates 80% of the sector’s revenue. To address this gap, Safetipin, supported by GIZ, conducted secondary research across five South Asian countries—India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. The study identifies the barriers preventing women from entering and thriving in transport-based gig work. It’s time to understand these challenges and advocate for solutions that create equitable opportunities for women in the gig economy. Let’s rethink how we shape inclusive futures in this evolving sector. 📝Check out the publication on our Knowledge Hub platform: https://lnkd.in/eP9xDSph #GenderEquality #GigEconomy Safetipin

Mobility is not just about getting from point A to B—it’s about access, opportunity, and equality. At Safetipin, we believe in creating mobility systems that prioritize sustainability, safety, and inclusivity for everyone. That’s why we’re proud to collaborate on the Dilli Charter with City Sabha, Raahgiri Foundation, and Young Leaders for Active Citizenship (YLAC) as part of the Sustainable Mobility Network. We're reimagining Delhi’s transport to ensure clean air and better mobility are top priorities this election season. Let’s make it clear: Delhi deserves a transport system that works for all.
With the Delhi elections just around the corner, one thing is clear: we can all agree that clean air is on top of every voter’s agenda! 🚍🌿 💨 Did you know that 51.5% of local pollution comes from transport emissions? Our unchecked reliance on private vehicles has made Delhi’s transport system a major contributor to challenges like air pollution, heat waves, last-mile connectivity issues, and affordability concerns. In this context, we are thrilled to announce an important initiative: we are in the process of drafting the Dilli Charter, a citizen-led reimagination of Delhi’s mobility that envisions a city that is sustainable, equitable, safe, and healthy for all! 🌏✨ 🤝 This charter is being co-created by City Sabha, Raahgiri Foundation, Safetipin, and Young Leaders for Active Citizenship (YLAC) as part of the Sustainable Mobility Network. Through extensive consultations with experts and citizens, we are identifying the most pressing priorities to address this election cycle. We are taking this charter to candidates across political parties so that they know, this is important to Delhi voters and they make it a part of their governance agenda! 🗳️ 🚦 What improvements would you like to see in Delhi’s mobility and public transport? 💬 Share your thoughts below and stay tuned for the launch of the final charter of demands! 🔖🙌 No matter who wins or loses Delhi, we have a right to breathe, let's make it known!
