About us
SEARCH provides healthcare to the rural and tribal people in Gadchiroli district, with a vision of Aarogya Swaraj: "People’s Health in People’s Hands, by empowering individuals and communities to take charge of their own health, and thereby, help them achieve freedom from disease as well as dependence." Gadchiroli is one of the most impoverished districts in India with tribals constituting 30% of its population. The poverty, illiteracy and remoteness add to the huge healthcare challenges in this region. Moved by the dire circumstances, visionaries Dr. Rani and Dr. Abhay Bang set up SEARCH in 1986, to live among these people and serve them. SEARCH has now been working among the rural and tribal poor and marginalised for over 37 years. We work with the rural and tribal communities to identify their health needs and develop interventions models that are both sustainable and community empowering. SEARCH, today, is recognised as a global leader amongst public health institutions. Our community-based participatory approach has made pathbreaking contributions in the public health problems of not just Gadchiroli, but also globally.

This article speaks about the traditional practices followed by women in the tribal areas of Gadchiroli during menstruation and the significance of health education to break the stigma associated with it. The experience of Tarunybhan, working with more than 80,000 such adoloscents in Maharashtra for over 30 years, revealed a significant change in attitude, knowledge and practices not just of children, but also of teachers. Tarunyabhan covers a wide range of topics other than menstruation, that gives a comprehensive understanding of various aspects of sexual and reproductive health. Dr. Rani Bang, veteran Gynaecologist and Public Health Researcher started Tarunyabhan in 1995, based on her own experience as a Gynaecologist in Gadchiroli, Maharashtra. Though sex education is part of school curriculum, it is one of the most ignored subjects and teachers themselves shy away from discussing the topic, even today in most parts of the country. Though, there has been some progress, there is a need for collaborative efforts, to ensure that each child who is entering his/ her adoloscence is aware of the biological changes they are undergoing. To watch her sessions on Tarunyabhan, visit : https://lnkd.in/d-yGdrsQ #menstrualhealth #healtheducation #reproductivehealth #adoloscents #awareness

"Research with the people: This approach shares power with the people. When people provide you with questions, or questions emerge through your observations and dialogue with the people, you involve people in collecting the data, report your finding to them and then develop a solution that involves people. It enables them, it serves them." Dr. Abhay Bang of SEARCH, Gadchiroli articulates their experience of moving to not just a research based approach but also research with people This is exactly why we at PatientsEngage advocate for patient partnered research and patient partnered care Dr Shital Patel Lavleen Gaur #PatientsPartneredCare #PatientPartneredResearch

Many of us do research 'on' the people; Some do it 'for' the people; Few are able to do research 'with' the people. Inspiring piece by Dr Abhay Bang from SEARCH, Gadchiroli explains the difference: https://lnkd.in/e8J29f2W
