How can cities become gender and youth responsive? The Cities for Youth (CFY) program, led by Safetipin and supported by Fondation Botnar closed its first cycle with clear evidence that investing in youth data, youth indicators and youth leadership can shift the needle in making cities safe and inclusive for all, especially youth and women. The CFY collaborators launched the second cycle of Cities for Youth with increased imagination, audacity, and a commitment to addressing more complex systemic issues that obstruct youth voices in urban systems. The Start Up! team is overjoyed to resume its role as knowledge and MEL partners. We are looking forward to the next three years of learning, partnership and discovery on youth urban well-being. The ORA Fellows retreat at the SARA Centre in the Western Ghats belt led to deep discussions on resilience, imagination, and creative life force. We spoke of interconnections between resilient leaders, communities, and environments. The Fellows spoke of the imagination that will be needed to generate grassroots narratives, ground-up knowledge, and innovation to address the polycrisis. Solidarity, interconnectedness, and collective imagination: these themes held the ORA India cohort two Fellows together as they traveled into the rainforests of the Western Ghats for their retreat. The ORA Fellows were hosted for five memorable days in the village of Dombekoppa by the SARA Centre. SARA is an inspiring community-owned space of art and ecology set up by ORA Fellow Arun Kumar. From treks in the rarest of rare, primeval freshwater forest swamps to walks through organic farms, the ORA India Fellows engaged in immersive conversations on the interconnections between personal, community, and ecological resilience. They spoke with progressive farmers, local intellectuals, and cultural icons of the region on creativity, sustainability, and staying grounded. The five days were filled with poetry, music, and film screenings, leading to silence, laughs, tears, and warm embraces. Thank you, team SARA, for your warmth, hospitality, and unparalleled cuisine. Today is #WomensEntrepreneurship Day. Through our engagement and partnership with women entrepreneurs across 17 states, we have learned that women do business differently. However, their approach to entrepreneurship is not being codified so that the larger business and development sector can learn from them. How can mentoring become gender-responsive for girls, adolescents and young women? This was the theme of the session moderated by Start Up! in the first Mentoring Summit in India organized by Mentor Together. Manisha Gupta from Start Up! invited three powerful women leaders who had once been mentees to share their stories of how mentoring transformed them. The speakers – Darshana Joshi from Vigyanshaala, Shruti Gokuldas from LinkedIn, and Arundhuti Gupta from Mentor Together- spoke powerfully of the design and systems they were creating in their organizations to mentor women leaders. They spoke of the ecosystem challenges that come in the way of demonstrating effective mentoring from a gender lens. The session concluded on the note that when mentors set the intention and embark on a quest to enable women leaders, their entire organizations and ecosystems become enabling.
